Introductions / Charles Eakin
« on: January 30, 2018, 10:48:46 AM »
Good morning all,  Unfortunately, I attended the visitation for Morrie Eakin this morning in Gulfport, Mississippi.  He died from heart trouble a couple of days ago at 91 years of age.  He and his older brother, Charlie, grew up in New Orleans and were Simplex collectors.  Their Simplex story is featured of pages 5 and 6 of Gary Wollard's book.  I had a very good visit with Charlie (now age 95) at the visitation, and I have made a pledge, along with another nearby collector, to look in on Charlie in the days to come.  Charlie still lives in his house in Diamondhead, Mississippi, and has a sitter with him.  I know from conversations with Morrie, that he visited Charlie on a regular basis. Charlie said that Morrie had his own room in his house.  Morrie provided Charlie's connection to the community.  I am happy to hear that he is still in his house with a sitter, but I know from family experiences that there are sitters who are active with a person, and there are sitters who only sit.  Each of us needs social connections with others and things to do outside of the house.  Although I cannot go over there every week, I certainly plan to have some social activities with him.  I bought my first Simplex from him, and want to continue to support our many years of friendship.  Mike Montgomery Ocean Springs, Mississippi

Buy, Sell, Trade / Headlight needed for G Model
« on: November 01, 2015, 01:50:55 PM »
List,
I am still searching for a correct headlight for a military G model.  This is a bike that several collectors (including Gary Wollard and Norm Burton) had a hand in restoring.  As soon as I acquire the headlight, the bike will be placed in the World War 2 museum in New Orleans. I would certainly appreciate a donation, but, at this point, I would be willing to purchase, just to complete the process.  Gary and Norm would never forgive me for placing a bike in the museum that was not complete.  If you don't have a headlight, any leads would also be appreciated!!  Mike

Other Things Simplex / Norman Burton
« on: April 27, 2014, 05:43:32 PM »
Folks,  I am sorry to report the death of Norman Burton, a Servi-Cycle expert from St. Petersburg, Florida.  Norm was one of a kind.  His knowledge of Simplexes and all things mechanical never ceased to amaze me.  He was always willing to share what he knew.  I have often regretted that I did not record some of the conversations that I heard between Norm and Gary Wollard.  You will see evidence of his knowledge in Gary's book.  They could really split hairs on any detail over why something was engineered a particular way.
I remember that Norm's birthday was October 1, and I believe that he was 87 on his last birthday.  He actually died on April 2, but I did not learn of his death until yesterday.  He was cremated, and his ashes were spread in Tampa Bay.  He leaves one daughter, one son, and one step son.  His daughter has asked that collectors not call her about parts at this point in time.  In the future she will catalog all of what he had and make some or all of it available.
Peace in all of the pieces, Mike

Hi folks, I had a call from Bob this afternoon. He had a fall last Sunday while dealing with his tractor in the snow.  As a result his hip was broken.  Surgery was done, and he now has two permanent pins in his hip.  He was transferred to a step down unit a couple of days ago, and is making good progress.  Please keep Bob in your thoughts and prayers. Other Things Simplex / Vintage Motorbike Show at Portland
« on: June 11, 2012, 06:20:36 AM »
Greetings,
I just talked with Bob Legron last night to make my final arrangements to attending the show - my first time.  I fly out of Gulfport, MS, to Houston, then to meet Bob in Columbus, Ohio on Monday, July 9.  I've never understood why I need to fly west in order to fly north???
I'm still working to get the 1945 model from Gary Wollard to the WW II museum in New Orleans (90 miles from me in Ocean Springs).  I certainly hope that John Treen hasn't given up on me.
I look forward to meeting several of you on this list in a few weeks.
Mike

« on: April 02, 2012, 08:35:39 AM »
Good morning,
My 1949 or 1950 Model L Servi-Cycle took first place in the unrestored class at the show yesterday on Dauphin Island, Alabama.  I purchased this bike from Adam Wollard last summer after Gary's death.  A lot of folks had stories about riding Servi-Cycles as kids.  How sweet it is!!!!!!!!!  Mike
