Other Things Simplex / Re: Merry Christmas
« on: December 24, 2022, 11:43:42 AM »
Merry Christmas, everyone!  I have four Simplexes and none have been running for a couple of years...  Our family is getting together later tonight and so I decided to work on them for a couple of hours.  Hopefully I will get a couple of them running by this summer....maybe one for Portland.  Thanks everyone for posting - fun to read them.  I hope everyone has a great New Year!

I knew I had a problem. I am working on a bed for my youngest granddaughter - my 5th bed!  I am also trying to plant about three acres of  pasture to get some sheep and pigs this year - the fence isn't quite done.  Last year I finished and installed a 35 ft. high 1920s Aermotor windmill by our pond.  I am working to finish building two acoustic guitars and it's time to spray my fruit trees...AND trying to keep my four Simplexes running - they all need work...I knew I had a problem, now I know what it's called.  Definitely have MPD.  Thanks for letting me know.

Nice job Rick but didn't they use a skip tooth chain in 1937? Just kidding that looks great.

Hi everyone,
My wife and I picked up the virus a couple of weeks ago.  Today was the first day out of quarantine.  We are both feeling well and I am thankful I can go back to work tomorrow.  Happy Thanksgiving, everyone!

Congratulations on your retirement, Rick!  That should give you time to catch up on all of your projects.  I work until noon every day at a restaurant and food processing facility, so we are still working.  I was working on two of my bikes, but Wayne doesn't have any back wheel pulleys as of now.  So I am back to my wood-working - making two acoustical guitars.  Hope everyone is doing well.

Wow! Those look great!  I wish I would have had a teacher that would have taught us that kind of skill!  I did get to take a go-cart in and I made a frame on the back of it.  I installed an engine and a  3 ft. propeller.  We took it out in the parking lot but it never had enough rpms to move it.  It's a wonder no one was killed - there was no safety shield around it.   :D

No, that was  the first one I bought about 20 years ago. It was a basket case I found on ebay. A farmer had it in Oklahoma. I still have my other 55 in my shop in pieces parts.

Looks good Rick. Pete, did that compression plate come out of the bike you had all the problems with.

Pete, when I was driving in the country a few years ago I saw an Amish girl pushing a reel mower without a motor on it.  But when I looked at the barn, the guys had a Honda engine on the hay elevator to put hay up in the barn.  I didn't think that was fair - they could've shared their motor with the girl.   :D

Traveled 1300 miles to feast my eyes on Simplex iron!  And it was worth it!

After Gary passed away, I was in contact with his ex-wife and she sent me a picture of a 1941 leaning against the wall in his basement.  When I got down there, I went over to it and put my hand underneath the gas tank and it was so rusty that my fingers went right through it.  She felt so bad -  she sold it to me at a good price.  I got to see three rooms of his collection.  I ended up driving down later and buying a 1955 from her also.

Thanks Tom, it was great to see what the early ones looked like. Big difference between that and an automatic.

No, I did not recognize any of the other buyers.  Jim was not there, and I don't believe I've ever met Ernie.  The guy that bought most of the frames was a local, I believe, just because of the truck that he picked them up with.  As you probably already know, the restored 1940's went for $1,700.  The 1957 all original went for $3,600.  I picked up a complete non-running motor for $190.  I'm sure if you would have been there you would have taken home some treasures.
