Does anyone know if the MT carbs that Dennis Carpenter sales which are actually for Cushman's compatible with Simplex?
They look exactly like the MT1 carbs I only wonder if they are spring loaded closed as the Simplex carbs are.

The Carpenter carbs work well.  There is no return spring on the throttle of a Simplex, only on the choke.

Search the main page for Carpenter, and you will see some comparisons between them and an original, as well as a simplex modification.

Thanks Rick. I believe I meant to state the Simplex MT and MS carbs are spring loaded to the open position rather than closed. When you insert the throttle cable to attach you actually pull the throttle closed and tighten down the hold screw.
I'll look closer at the main page comparison and modification.

I picked up what I believe is a '53 Wizard Automatic complete and untouched other than someone has put some other carb on it. It's been sitting quite a while but I shot some starting fluid in it and it fired right up.

Need to clean out the tank and coat it, clean the fuel bowl and rewire the switch and lights but the motor appears to be in great condition and has no broken fins.

Frame # 09023
Motor # 17330B

Thanks Again

There is no spring on the throttle shaft of an  MT-1D. There is a spring on the choke shaft only.

What I do when I install the throttle cable is open the twist grip all the way, slide the barrel clamp on the carb to full throttle, then tighten.  This way, you can not overturn the throttle by pulling too hard and bending the throttle shaft or linkage.

Funny story on throttles:  One of our most talented members told me his throttle worked backwards, as in you twisted it away from you to increase speed, instead of twisting towards you. I said I had never heard of that, and he told me it was like that when he go it, and the bike was mostly original, so he assumed that is how it went.  We were walking around Portland together when we happened along what appeared to me an original, barn find bike of the same year.  This bike happened to be next to Wayne's trailer, and the three of us looked at it together.  I commented to Wayne that I didn't know that the throttle on these bikes ran backwards.  Wayne said they didn't, they were just like all the rest.  After we looked at it, we realized the throttle arm was installed on the wrong side of the throttle shaft on the members bike! This was on an MS carb, as the throttle arm is held on by a screw and not a rivet like most MT carbs.

As a side not, the Carpenter carb has a screw holding the throttle arm and can be adjusted to different positions.

Thanks Rick.
The MS carbs do have a spring in the bottom that return them to full open. I can see how the arm on top being on the wrong side would cause the throttle to work backwards.

I couldn't find any info on Carpenter's website as far ass Simplex modification goes. Probably just not looking in the right place.
I'll call them tomorrow and discuss but if the throttle arm can be adjusted it should work.
Have you actually used one of their carbs?

Thanks again Rick.
I misunderstood when you stated search the main page but should have known you meant here.

Here's a couple pics of the Wizard I picked up.

That bike looks really good!  That is a 1955 model.  I am of the belief that the Wizard was only available this one year, but others think differently.  It is impossible to determine whether any Simplex was originally a Wizard, or if someone added Wizard decals later, as the decal was the only difference.

Nice find , Huston .

Looks to be fairly complete . 5 minutes work and it'll be ready for Portland . ;)

The front hub is very unusual. It is only 1 1/4" in width compared to any other of my Simplex front hubs. They all measure right at 2 1/2" wide.
Also the handlebar plate is curved which I was under the assumption this went away in 1953ish.
The Wizard Automatic emblem appears to be original to the bike and the paint is definitely original. There is no trace of the decal being replaced.
I have also been told Western Auto only sold these for one year although I'm not sure of the year. any literature I've found just states they sold them in the mid-fifties.
It does not have a tab for a brake light mount at all, not sure if that helps determine the year but for what it's worth.

I ordered a carb from Carpenter's today and have the tank clean and prepped to be sealed.

Is the clutch a single or double track clutch?

The curved handlebar mount was used sometime into 1955.

That front hub has me stumped.  Post a closer picture of it please.

Huston, are you and your bikes going to join us in Portland this summer?

It is a single track clutch, has the barbell type weights.

My plans are to be in Portland this year with my bikes.

Attached is a pic of the Wizard front hub and one of a regular Simplex hub.

I may call Wayne about this one or take this bike over for him to gaze at this weekend.

Looks to be adapted from a bicycle or other scooter. None of the hardware looks Simplex.  If you need a front hub, let me know, I think I have one.

That's kind of what I thought although the original paint on the hub is the Simplex color so I'm a bit confused.
I just might take you up on the hub and appreciate the offer.

I got the repro carb from Carpenter's in two days time.
I plan on making the needed changes and install today.
Still waiting on the gas tank sealer but with some luck I'll have the Wizard on the road before the weekend passes.

I like that  most talented  part of your earlier post Rick!  I haven't looked at it yet but you know I will be critiquing Treens throttle designs over the winter!  Also planning on removing both wheels for greasing and brakes.  Its not like I have  rode it a million miles but it as been twenty one years since I restored it.

Thanks for the info on the reproduction carb Rick.
The Wizard lives and I took it for a spin today.
I still need to wire up the lights but I've already got the wires pulled so I'm off to the garage to hook them up.
Got sidetracked by a company meeting in Vegas. The meeting was same old same old but Vegas is always fun.
I didn't get to see Chumlee but made it to Pawn Stars.
