Title: cracked shaft!

Thing were going really good till this happened!.  Cracked the shaft thru the center of the keyway slot for the mag rotor......  Any ideas?

Yeah . Like Reese , that's a new one on me .

I guess you'd have to take it down to the point of being able to see how far along the shaft that crack went .
I think , if what we see in the pics is all the farther it is , it might be able to be grooved , welded and resurfaced . Both sides of course .

I'm curious as to exactly how that happened . Was it something you did or is it simply bad steel ?

I would send it to Wayne. He will remove the shaft from the counterweight, and put a new shaft on.  By the time you weld it up and re machine it, the price is a wash.

It looks like the steel was weaker then the key for the rotor.  The key was a little chewed up and the keyway is pretty wallowed out.  Ill pull the crank and see how far it goes!  Those woodrif type keys shouldnt do that!.  Ill add some more pics when its apart.

at some point , it must have been run a bit with the flywheel/nut loose on the shaft.

I hope not! Last year I ran mine with the nut coming loose on me. I hope my shaft is not going to crack. ???
