One of the problems with making tires in this country is that they have to be DOT certified in order to be sold for highway use. The process makes the tooling/startup cost prohibitive. Coker tried having their Cushman tires made offshore, but the rubber was defective, and checked in less than a year. They brought their molds back to the US, went thru the certification process, and replaced all of the offshore tires under warranty. Cushman tires were not available for the 2 years it took to go through this certification and restart US production. The price of Cushman tires more than doubled. In the 15 years or so since, Cushman tires have doubled in price again. And Cushman tires have relatively high volume. Simplex tires have a much smaller volume, but it is so much easier to find them than before Coker stepped up and repopped them. Considering the very low number of Sportsman bikes out there, the cost doesn't seem excessive to me. It used to be so frustrating looking for good usable Simplex tires 20 years ago. I have never had a problem with my Coker ires, and I can order them over the phone, as well as on line. Talk about convienient!

Coker doesn't make 27 x 3 tire, They have 2 choices that I think would work. One is the one above, a 27 x 3.5. The other is 26 x 3.0. I wonder how many sizes simplex used on the sportsman.

I did find out that a sportsman rim is what is called a "CC rim", which are 10mm larger that a regular 20" clincher rim. They are European clincher rims and must use a suitable tire. Coker Tire states that the 2 tires they make are to be used ONLY on the european size rims.

I use kenda flame 3" tires on my 2008 ambassador (whizzer)...they are replacements I bought for around $26 ea at a local bicycle shop. Comparing them to what came on the whizzer I could find no difference other than the replacements weren't marked DOT...been on since early spring...so far no problems...and that bike bumps over 50mph easy with the 212 I used

I recently read a reprint of an old VMBC magazine. In it was an article that mentioned the 27 x 3 Simplex tire. At the time, these were not available from anyone, so it said that a 3.00 x 21 motorcycle tire worked. I might try this, as I can get some of these for about $45 a tire.

Pete, motorcycle and bicycle tires are measured differently. Motorcycle tires are measure by rim size, bicycle tires by outside tire diameter.
A Simplex is a bicycle tire size.

I headed down the moped tire path for awhile. Think they measure like motorcycle tires but with a bit less brawn.

None! lol But there are plenty of bicycle tires that fit, but they wear rapidly and are not built as heavy duty. For the regular 26 x 2.50, I just spring for the Coker Simplex tire. $126 is not that bad and they are exactly lIke original.
Coker doesn't make the exact 27 x 3 Simplex tire. The tire they offer is 27 x 3.50 and is not made with the original Simplex markings, from what I understand.
EDIT: AFTER SPEAKING WITH COKER, I DON'T BELIEVE THEY MAKE ANY TIRES TO FIT THE SPORTSMAN!!!

Didn't continue going down that avenue but thought I may have ended up with something.

I wonder if these "fat tires" that the trick riders are using would work in a pinch? I've not seen one in real life to see how sturdy they are made, but I've seen some youtubes of guys dropping 20 feet onto the wheels without blowing.

Thanks to the mountain bikers and BMXers the technology in these tires has risen. It seems most places will stock 'folding' tires'. To me it is a bit of a fad as I am old school and prefer a wire bead. Plus the foldables ship a whole lot easier. I read a ton about these while choosing a tire. MTB riders worry about getting their sidewalls cut on rocks and such and i guess that is where all the kevlar comes in. i think the wire bead just provides uniformity for a good solid grasp at the rim. They are hard to find in many makes though.
