Why couldn't they have been stamped/pressed?  Was it because they are too "deep" and the steel used would have torn?  Just curious?

Looks like a press mold to me.

All the members is what makes this forum work.  Without everyone's knowledge coming together, a lot of this information would be lost.  Hopefully us younger guys can keep this going.  I have tried to get a couple of the Simplex old timers to come on and post some of the vast knowledge they have, but without luck.

As memory serves, it was just aluminum without paint.  The brass one I have only seen on a Sportsman.  I could be wrong about all this.

I was asking about the one on the sportsman.

Like Tom said.  These carbs are about as simple as they get. There are not many parts to keep track of.  Remember, do not over tighten the needle screws, as this can destroy the needle and seats.

Bill Erickson had the 1952 decals available on his site.  I don't know if he still has any left, but I would send him an email and ask.  Wayne has the Simplex Automatic ones available.

Looking good James!  I am leaning towards the Blue for my bike.  How about a little how to on the install of this type of vinyl?

Can't tell for sure but it looks like your crank stuffer is on inside out. Does your cover protrude outward from the block?  Is that a dimple on the side of it? If so,  turn it around and put dimple up towards piston and in line with cylinder. I don't think an 'M' will run hardly at all without the stuffer in place.

Tom, that is just a wood cover that James made.  Hopefully he has the stuffer under there.

Fred, I get the feeling there are not many like your dad these days.  It seems a lot of people just want to be part of the FSA (free shit army)!  I have done my best to pass along the importance of hard work and perseverance to my children, and I hope when they have kids of their own, they do the same.

How thick is that steel you are using for a motor plate?

Those are the parts being sold by Steven.  Maybe he will give a good deal to someone on here.

We may never know.  There is no factory documentation.  The best we can do is narrow down the years by changes that people have observed over the years. The last model that has ever been documented was frame number 18186.  We know that Simplex ceased production of these bikes in 1960 and they were only building a dozen or two a month at the end.

Since our numbers are within 250 of the last one built, that means very late 1959 or early 1960 to me.  I will register mine as a 1960, unless someone can convince me otherwise.

Yes, found it, 17952

Wow, mine is 17956!  I think both of ours are actually 1960 models, but I am not positive.  Check out my build thread in the restoration section.
