Post a picture so I can see how much wear you have.

Wayne is usually very good about getting back to people.  If you PM me your phone number, I will have him get back to you.

Just a repair someone did to fix worn out parts.  Simplex ran those parts steel on steel.  The kick start shaft is 3/4”.  What does yours measure?

Rick

Looks good.  I'm studying your design.

Mike, I followed Simplex’s design! 😂

That bike needs the side covers!  It looks like he did nothing about the flywheel cover or the air cleaner either. So close, he should have done it right!

Good evening Ron,
I am with Rick on that gear.  Unless you have a way to make and weld a new flange on the gear, that one no longer will stay centered and will probably damage any repair you make to the threads on that expensive hard to find a replacement for flywheel.

That gear centers up using three holes in the flange to fit the three studs on the flywheel.

Hopefully thread inserts will fit, otherwise custom made ones might be needed.

Good luck.
Scooter

Scooter, in case you don’t know, even if the center of the flywheel is completely cracked and unusable, Wayne cuts the center out and puts new centers in.  They are made of steel, and fix the problem permanently.

Hi Ron,

Yes, you need to use a Jam Nut, which are about half the thickness of a standard nut.

The pinion gear should bolt on flush.  That pinion gear is garbage. Wayne Mahaffey has new ones available.

The threads on the flywheel should be 1/4-20, but they looked like someone may have drilled them out.  Check out this thread for how I like to make a repair.

The proper stud for the flywheel is 1/4-20 in the flywheel to 1/4-28 on the other end of the stud.  Wayne will also have those studs.

If you need the procedure to remove the flywheel, it can be found on the site.

Way to go Tom. That just gives you that warm fuzzy feeling when you are finally able to get that one allusive part. But now, will it make it to Portland? Bob

Bob, are you and Mike going to bring a ride to Portland?

Ron, different years have different flywheels and pinion gears. Post a picture of yours.

As always, if you wait for the official dates, you have missed most of the meet.  Come at least a day or three early! I'll be there Sunday.

Yeah, he seems to start but not finish things.

Just like when someone is selling a project, they tell you all the hard work is done, just needs finishing.  To me that means they did all the easy stuff and don't have the ability to do the hard stuff.

Since the last post was 1.5 years ago, are we to assume this is another of his projects that he didn't finish?

I also inherited my first lathe from my grandfather.  It was an Atlas/Craftsman 6". I passed it along to my nephew about 12 years ago, and replaced it with a SB9A, which I still have.  I supplemented it with a SB13.  I also have a Millrite vertical mill. I love having these machines, it allows me to make many things.
