Title: Does anyone rebuild coils?
Post by: Mo in Mo on November 30, 2016, 09:18:18 AM
My coil is bad in my 37 Simplex its an Eiseman 71 LE the coil is getting a reading of 1 ohm should be around 5-8. Have called a few places and lots of people repair tractors but haven't found any that repair flywheel type mags.

Thanks for any help.

You might think about rewinding your own coil .

I rewound my headlight coil with excellent results .
I unwound the original wire onto a tomato wire cone , loosely ( you may have to find something bigger ) .
Then sprayed a couple of coats of paint on the wire . Let it dry and then wound that wire back onto the steel core .
Of course , I paid attention as to just how the wire came off the core , so I could apply it in a like manner .

I could see were the thinner wire of an ignition coil would present a problem , unless you made a decent jig to preform the task .

I believe Maytag engines used the same coil.  Bob Blinn's dad used to rewind these, and other Maytag sources still have coils available.

I ended up going with Mikes Magneto. I called over 20 places. I found only three that would work on a fly wheel coil. Lots of places work on coils just not when they are in a fly wheel. After doing research I decided on Mikes. One person had some very very bad reviews. The other one that you guys referred seemed very knowledgeable but only had a 1 week wait. Mikes was a 2 month wait and while not always, when people have long waits its usually worth it.

They then called after I sent the coil and they actually had one on the shelf already rebuilt. So I get an early X-mas and my wife gets to be even more mad that I'm spending a bunch of money before the holidays. :)
