I got the Simplex bug. I picked up what is suppose to be a 1952.
Frame number is 10192
Motor number is M15223B

Can anyone tell me if these numbers would be a 52?

I'm leaning towards a 1955 for the frame.  Motor may be earlier, like a 1954.  Post some pictures of the bike so we can look at some of the details.

Is it an automatic or shift bike?

It's an automatic.
I think it's been pieced together and I've already got the motor and tranny pulled off the bike.
I'll try and post some pics tomorrow.

I agree with Rick, I think you have a '55 bike with a '54 motor.  Let us know if your dash plate (the metal plate the handlebars are bolted to) have curved sides or straight sides.

I picked up another Simplex the other day. I'll try and post a picture of the frame number. It took me a while to figure out what happened when they stamped it but I think I did.
Frame number is 07751, the 5 looks like a backwards "C" and only half the size of the other numbers. I believe the stamp drifted up on the person stamping it and when he hit it with his hammer it only stamped the bottom of a 5.
I'm taking the motor to Wayne tomorrow and have him go through it.

I'd agree with that . You can see the # get shallower toward the top .
07751 would make it most likely a 1954 frame . Possibly a late '53 , but

Looks more like an  8 someone didn't wanna hold straight.

I thought it was an 8 at first but my old eyes now tell my old brain that I can faintly see a straight line leading upward from the top half of the backward "C". I think once I get the paint knocked off of it I should be able to see it a bit better.

What is the motor number from the latest bike purchase?

There is not a serial number on this motor. I took it to Wayne yesterday and he said he has seen a few like this. Seems at some point early on in it's life the owner must have sent the motor back to Simplex for repair and they replaced the lower unit and he said they did not serialize them when this occurred. It is an "M" motor. The transmission is a 1953 according to Wayne. He said the only year they made the automatic transmission with the barbell style weights was in 53.
Looking at the registry the frame number would fall in the 53 range I believe.

I picked up an "L" motor along with this bike. It's serial number is L11078M.

Hmmm. that's interesting.  I agree that they probably replaced the crankcase, but I'm surprised they didn't transfer the old number to the new case.  Maybe the assumed that having the frame number was all that was important.
