Interesting!  The bike looks to be a mixture of years.  Late tank, early handlebars, 1953 or earlier transmission.  The motor is 1953.  Look under the neck and see if there is a number there.  Please post a couple more pictures so we can see more details.   Post a picture from the rear so we can see if the frame is straight or has a dog leg in it.

Welcome to the group!
Rick

One of the earliest 1953 bikes built.  The made a few shifter bikes in 1953, but most were automatics.  The automatics outsold the shift bikes by such a large margin, they stopped making them in 1954.

Do you see any blue paint anywhere? I was told that my Simplex was a USAF bike. It is setup like yours and only 29 off from your frame number and was painted A F blue. Unfortunately it is missing the contract plate from the round crankcase cover.

Very nice bike. Can you tell if that is the original color or if not can you see any of it's original color showing.
The inventory stamp makes me think military also. It would be fun to try and find out some of it's history such as where used and what branch of service. I'm with RickS "more pictures please" and if possible confirmation on original color.
Again nice bike.
Cheers

Hi BJM,
Do you have any before pictures? I enjoy seeing how they looked when found.

It would be easy to replicate the ID plate now that there is a picture of one!

bought as it is pictured. bad black paint job. I want to get it running before striping and painting it. the frame seems straight [?] the head lamp seems wrong ,the tail lamp ? [dietz]
