Hi guys, ever since I got the simplex the brakes have been weak. I tightened the throw and it got a lil better but then started to make that bad brakes squeel. I thought the shoes were toast but upon inspection this is what I found. Looks like theres plenty of shoe there, but the mating surface.....

The brakes on these bikes have always left something to be desired .
I just press a bit harder and can pretty easily lock the rear wheel .
My drum looks a bit better than yours , but , I'd think if you simply run what you have and press a bit more ...
There are conversions that can be made to work . I'm not sure it's worth the work , unless you ride the bike a lot .
Pete . ;)

Yeah I cannot lock her, must need more throw.
-
Think I should spin her up and sandpaper it down a little?

I'm sure sanding wouldn't hurt it a bit .
You could rough up the shoes , too .
Pete . :)

That drum is so pitted you are definitely losing surface area. I know it’s a lot of work to disassemble a wheel, but you could then turn the drum on a lathe.
How old is the brake shoe? Looks like one of Wayne’s woven style from a while ago. Tom, KartJockey on here, relines shoes and they seem to stop really well.

Yes I was disassembling it for kart jockey, that’s when I saw there was still plenty of shoe there, but if his pads are better I will still send them out.
