Title: How many Sportsmans do we know of their location.
Post by: Bob53 on March 31, 2015, 07:42:21 AM
I know of 4 in Oklahoma. Bob Kerr has a 58. My friend Mike has 2 big fender 1960's. I have an almost rolling 58. Even if you only have a partial Sportsman lets get it counted. I think this will be interesting to see how many we can account for that is left in existence. Thanks to Rick for getting this section up and rolling.

I have one.  Mostly correct. I need an airliner and a single plug cylinder to make it right.

Rick ,

That's a real nice bike , but I think you should take the Trail Rated emblem off that Jeep and stick it on the Sportsman . ;)

Pete . :)

I would like to get proper tires, but I can't seem to find any.  If you have a stash, please let me know!

I know you said before , but , what tires did the factory have mounted on the Sportsman ?
That info would be good to add to this new section .

Pete . :)

Small Diamond button style. I have one old original, if I could find another I will put them on.  Here is the one I have.

So when and on what did Simplex put the single spark plug cylinders on?  Just the Sportsmans?

I don't know. I seem to remember Wayne saying that he had never seen one on a Simplex Scooter, and those were built at the very end.

It seems the single plug head came out with the new and improved 150cc. Along with the inboard kickstart and a few other small changes. If I am correct. The Sportsman came right after this and carried out to the end of production. I'm not sure if they ever made any dual plug 150cc engines. There wasn't many of the 150cc engines made and they are even less now. These parts are very hard to find. I have seen pictures of a Sportsman with a dual plug external kick. I don't know if it was a transplant or if Simplex built these also.

Post the picture of the external kick Sportsman please.

The non Sportsman bikes carried on with the external kickstart right through the end of production in 1960.  I think the internal kickstart was to make it seem more modern, to compete against the Japanese bikes that were hitting the US market.

Late factory replacement cylinders were the one plug style.  I had a 48 model with a rebuilt engine, and the previous owner had the paperwork that came with the parts he ordered from Simplex about 1960.  I have a 2 plug 150 cc cylinder.
