Who's going to Portland this summer?

Only 6 weeks away, I am working to get my latest project finished before then!

I'll be there. Mike said he wanted to go too. Everyone who loves 2 wheeled toys should attend.

Along with the "meet", what else is nearby to see and/or experience in the area of Portland IN?  If I were to make the trip, I'd go to Wright-Patterson AFB museum, maybe visit a brother in IL on the way and was wondering what else would be on the itinerary to visit or see?

Paul ,

It hasn't even been 24 hours since you asked ...

Some guys don't read this site every day , believe it or not . ;)

Pete . :)

I figured you "old timers/regulars" (you, Rick, etc.who've been there multiple times) would have explored or known what else is around?

I've only been to Portland once . I went there for the show . Nothing else was of interest , to me .

Meeting some of these guys and seeing way more old bikes than I've ever seen in a single place , plus buying a couple 'goodies' while there was fulfilling enough .

Pete . :)

I am there for the meet only.  There are so many people to meet and talk with,  not much reason to leave.  Portland is a really small town.  The only place I have gone is to the Antiques market in town.  Oh, and the Greasy Pickle, lol.

The Greazy Pickle should be newly remodeled by now.  Generally, each time I go o Portland I find my way to the Koffee Kup diner downtown.  Thats about it or me.   Ifs it is hot out Travis and I might go for a drive to cool off in the car.  I started just staying right on the grounds because the aftermath of each day was great too.  So many guys just sitting around and fun to strike up dialog about engines and bikes. Kind of like more bang for my Buck!

Thanks, I was just curious.  Trying to justify the really long trip with other things to possibly see and do if I went.

Looks like that would be a 14 hour drive.

The AMCA has one of their national meets at Wauseon, Ohio the same weekend.  It is about 120 miles from Portland.  I am thinking about going there on Saturday.

Now we are only about 3 weeks away! Totally psyched. I received my VMCA membership for 2017 in the mail last Tuesday. Has anyone else gotten their's?

I hope the weather is good and not too hot, but I'll settle for dry. LOL

Probably not this year but, I will make contact with them and maybe spark up a friendship of sorts and bring up the idea/possibility.  Thanks for the info.  You guys have fun and take pics of some of the unusual stuff if you would.  I took a long ride yesterday and went to the "armor park" for awhile.  Here's a pic of a 105mm howitzer there with the bike.

What's the date  this year?

Officially starts Thursday, 7/20,  but in reality it starts days earlier.  I will be there Tuesday evening, and I expect it will be in full swing by then.  The meet ends Monday, but most people are gone by Sunday afternoon.

Hi all, it has been a long time since I have checked in. My wife and I have been extremely busy with the ice cream and popcorn and kettle Korn events. We will not be attending Portland this year, but hope to be there next year. I still get the simplex out with the wagon and sell popcorn during parads and special events. There are still. A lot of plans for the bike, bit not enough time. My wife has spoken with Reese wife, and they are gonna try stopping by our ice cream shop on their way this year, so that will be nice to see them. Will miss seeing the rest of you guys. Hope you all have a good time and remember to take a lot of pics.

Guess you couldn't find a ride Mike?  Hope to see you next year!

Met up at KampKartJockey with some of the guys also. If you are here, stop by and visit with us.

If you can't find us, look for the highest ground on the fairgrounds, Simplex Hill.

Rick ,

I'm kinda stuck here in Streator . We are on duty this weekend with the co-hosts doing a bridal shower for a daughter , in Chicago . So , they are 'occupied' . They've been doing a lot of prep work the last few days . The whole affair seems crazy . Bridal shower in Chicago ; wedding in a town a couple hours west and the reception in another town an hour south of that . Just plain nuts .

I opened the gate at daybreak this morning to find a huge walnut branch blocking the parking lot entry . Luckily , I was able to find some rope and tie it close to the tree it was still attached to ( some 20+ feet up ), so vehicles could get in . A few hours went by before city workers showed up to clean the mess .

I hope you guys have AC in some of those trailers . It's hot here , too .
Partly Cloudy
93.5 °F
Feels Like 116 °F
And we had 98% humidity this morning , but a bit less now .

I'd rather be in Portland , dodging rain ( we had 1.5" last night ) .

Pete . :)

Rain has been sporadic. Got some again this morning and for an hour this afternoon.  It certainly didn't dampen anyone's spirits. I have bought plenty of parts while here, and sold my stretch to Mike from Oklahoma.

The park seemed to empty out a little this afternoon. This may be because they are forecasting rain for tomorrow morning through the afternoon. I am planning on heading out to the fairgrounds in the morning for a while before making the long trek home.

Maybe we will see you next year, with a running bike!

I wanted to do some part shopping , too , and just be there .

Good for Mike . :)

Funny how a little rain quiets things .

We'll likely be out west next year and spend the summer in the Rockies . But , the summer after , I plan on Portland . We're planning on spending that summer in Michigan . That'll give us a chance to spend time with families , something we haven't done much of in years past .

Have a safe trip home .

Pete . :)

I did not make it this year. Really wanted to and at one point I was fairly confident that the stars were going to align and I actually would, but 2017 was once again not the year. I'm going to work towards getting there for 2018 if at all possible.

I have enjoyed following along here and checking out the photos that have been posted, so thanks for that!
