Have you booked your rooms for Portland yet? I have mine. There's only 250 days left before we're there.  8)

I appreciate your enthusiasm Reese!!  I have mine booked with the Coleman Tent Co.  Temporary address is Jay county Fairgrounds!

Thanks for the reminder Reese.  I just booked the Holiday Inn.  A little more comfortable than the Coleman tent!

That wasn't a heavy camped zone. There's a few cushman paddlers there and Wayne parks just on what will be the north end . So PD are you bringing this up because your going to be there this year?

Reese ,

I'm planning on being there . But , I posted the link because it might be of interest to you and anyone else that may have camped there .
If that building will have AC , maybe I'll just camp in it . ;)

Well I hope so I would like to meet you face to face. We are just north of the new building and a little right. You can't miss all the simplex motorcycles everywhere. I hope I get all my projects finished by then.

Looks like it's going to be an abreviated visit for me this year.  My Hi School reunion is that weekend  I went to one of the smallest schools in our state (20 kids in my graduating class) & we have "all school" reunions every 3 years, where anyone that ever went to school there is invited.  Looks like Thursday afternoon & Friday are the days I have open for Portland.

Just over 2 months to go!  I need to do a few things on the Sportsman to call it finished.  The auto transmission is engaging too early, I think it may have incorrect springs on the clutch shoes.  I also got a new pair of weights from Wayne for the double track clutch, as the ones in there have been modified, for some unknown reason.

Anybody else getting ready?

Not even close for me. I've got some parts due in from Wayne myself. Trying to figure out how to run the throttle cable to the carb. Not hard if it is where it should be but mine is 4inches lower and at a 45deg angle. Then would be the need to get it wired.

Made up some more brake linings to take to Portland. Still need to do my own on the 48.  Gonna change out the muffler on my 48.  I had to remake the canister part when I got the bike because it was dented badly. But I have found an original now. So will paint that up.  Need to continue with my custom kicker.

Me too!  Don't try for the last day of the show or you will be very disappointed.  Many people start leaving by Monday morning.

In case you don't know, a lot of people get there way before the actual dates of the event.

Reese ,

I did leave fuel in the tank . I don't think it was full and that may be the bad part . Premixed fuel to the top of the tank is like one of the best tank preservatives around .
I haven't done anything but load the bike . We've been too busy getting our house ready for market . Just listed it today . We should be back home by next Friday and then I'll have time to work on the Simplex .

One or two.  I was surprised that the coil died, as it was only a few years old.  I also ordered a Nova II ignition, but it did not get here before I had it running again.

PD,  How is the Simplex running out?  Ready for the show?  Is everyone preparing for the show?  I have my list made of the stuff I like to take and am planning on a longer trailer to bring all four bikes. my latest two won't be running but so people can look at them. Plus will bring a mini bike or two and my '39 Schwinn.

I'm still in high hopes to at least have mine running. I haven't got the time right now for the fine tuning it needs. That and all the mud and mosquitoes in my barn keeps me from wanting to go out and finish it. Here's the sign I had to post last week. Lol

I'm starting to get that Portland itch! I've been so busy lately...everything else has been consuming my time. I did get the Simplex out a couple of weeks ago for a parade, and the old throttle cable seized up. I ordered another from Wayne and got it installed. I also got a new jet for the carb, and it is running a lot better now. Just a couple of big popcorn events to go and we will be heading out. Planning on being there Thursday early. Hope to see as many of you guys as possible. Looking forward to the group photo again this year and hoping to blow away the 37 we had last year.

A friend who arrived at Portland Monday said the fairgrounds was a muddy mess with mounds of dirt all over the grounds.  The county was pulling out concessionaires from the County Fair with a 4 wheel drive tractor.  Then they got 5" of rain in 2 hours overnight.  He said this morning the entire town was barricaded off on all sides with Main St flowing water over the sidewalks.  No way to get back into the fairgrounds to check on his stuff.  A service garage near the grounds had water to mid height of the overhead doors.  The north road going east from the Hoosier Inn had 2' of water over the road.  No comments on the VMBC website.

Not looking good.

All the forecasts for heavy rains today, and nothing!  Unfortunately, almost everyone is packed up and gone.  This years weather made this one of the smallest meets ever!

I had a good time catching up with Tom, Reese, James, Ernie, Bob, Wayne, Mike, and many others.

Pete, aka PD, was even there and he does exist!    Good to meet you, hope to see you again next year.

I will head back to the fairgrounds tomorrow morning before heading home, as I am curious how many people will be left.

We drove straight through and made it home at 3:30 am. 13 1/2 hr drive. This was the first time we have driven it in one day. Popcorn was slow this yr, and the muck and mud made it challenging, but all in all we had a good time. I have some pics to post, but that will have to wait til I get caught up on some much needed rest. lol Nice to see all of you again!

James I enjoyed your share of the dinner. We had a good time even with the rain. We will be heading out Tuesday morning heading for pigeon forge to do the rollercoaster there and then turn towards home. That's not counting on the stop at a Bojangles chicken for some great chicken. Well I didn't take but eight or so pictures so Tom has to post some pics soon.

Sonya & I drove home last night after the banquet, just under 300 miles.  Went thru a pretty strong rain in Indianapolis & took a 2 hour nap at a rest area.  Got home right at 3am.

Sorry to have missed so many of you.  Next year won't have a reunion to interfere so will be able to come sooner.....we'll be like the old timers....come early, leave early.....

They had separate cash door prizes for kids under 12...that was a nice idea....

Reese won the long distance award!  I came up goose egg for any door prizes....

I spoke with Darren for a while before I left.  I voiced Tom's and my concern about the number of rental golf carts that clog up the pathways.  To my surprise, he said there were only 2 or 3 private rentals there, the other rentals were all for club staff use!  I said they seemed to be in the way of the scooters, and he seemed to believe this was because of all the mud and couldn't pull of the paths.  This is very possible, and we shall see if it is better next year.

We also spoke of moving the banquet up a day, to Sunday night.  He has been considering this, but is concerned that there will not be enough time to get all the events in, such as the rides, poker run, kids games, auction, etc.

I also let Darren know how much we all appreciate how much work he does to keep the club running!  I told him I know people are quick to complain, but almost never express thanks when things go well.  If you run into Darren next year, let him know how much his efforts are appreciated!

I didn't take many pictures, but here are a couple.

The first two are Wayne's golf cart. Check out the motor. Anyone want to guess what is under the hood?

The next 2 are the Simplex with Gravely L motor.  The bike is awesome, but the price is also!

No, motor is the stock OMC 2 cylinder, but the supercharger is from a Mini Cooper!

I take my hat off to Ernie for keeping Travis rolling on two wheels when he couldn't even walk otherwise.  Thanks again Ernie!  I will be calling you soon.

I'm a little disturbed I couldn't attend being only 2 hours away..you all know it's been wet a lot here in indiana...so the week before I'm scratching like I got mange all on my neck and arms...eventually I get worried cuz I'm using chemicals all around the house etc and I thought maybe I was having a reaction . I wasn't but when I went to the clinic they sent me to the hospital to be treated for severe gnat bites.  I guess stepping out onto the porch to smoke isn't so smart, even though there's a bug wacker there and tiki torches going often.
So, steroids and antibiotics and cremes to treat me and by Friday I was thinking maybe Saturday I'd drive up....nope....new bites, and knowing it was damp there I couldn't take the chance.  It's subsiding mostly now but I stay in a lot too.
So,bugs ruined my plans ....and I've never had an issue before moving here or this year.
Now I'm thinking maybe I can attend the buckeye scooter meet there in early sept. Isn't the same but least something.
Following online I noticed a few things besides those goofy carts cluttering the roads.
Opening the fairgrounds to early birds Sunday...5 days before the official first day...guarantees only one thing in my view.  The meets over when it starts mostly. I heard it was emptying sat...if that's so they need to change something.

The fairgrounds will not keep the early birds out.  Simply put, they want the camping money.  IMHO, if not for the weather, most people stay through Sunday, and either leave Sunday night or Monday morning.  Next year I will be going at least a day, maybe two, earlier.

Bruce, are you getting anywhere on those trucks?

Still on the trip home stopped in Pigeon Forge to ride the foster and this was the view from the hotel. We're still enjoying the town but we will need to go over bigger mountains later.

The trucks at a standstill but I've gathered some stuff for it .I know I keep saying soon but things come up.
The engine choice is kinda tough when I look at starting and charging systems. On the one hand harbor freight is easy, cept it doesn't charge...and that TAV requires a seperate bigger driven unit than it comes with and two clutches(like ricks)..looked at the differential axle from northern tool....it'll need a seperate clutch ahead of it adding another belt which I think will look cluttered...then there's the whizzer engine..electric start is doable...and then your right back at how to clutch it.
I'll get to it before summers end though.

You are making this harder than it has to be Bruce.  Those 6.5 hp chines motors are available with electric start and charging coils.  Electric problem solved.  You can buy the driver and driven clutches separately, as well as whatever belt you need.  As for the outboard clutches, if I do it again, I would just use solid pulleys to see what happens.  Much cheaper than clutches, and quieter too!  Those pulley clutches do rattle a bit when idling.

Did you build a tailgate yet?

So you don't think each wheel needed the clutch allowing slippage?

So you don't think each wheel needed the clutch allowing slippage?

Jim Lokai has done them both ways, and he said he couldn't feel much difference.  He also has one that uses a lawn mower center differential, and he said that is the same as the others.

Well, the lawn mower differential would allow the slippage on corners ...but we shall see

Well besides the Cushman minute miser I pick up for the wife that she loves I also got this. Its a heavily altered Simplex mini whatever. If anyone has any manuals on these I would like a copy to take it back to looking orginal as possible. The serial number is 6367 and is running somewhat. It idle's ok but doesn't want to take any fuel under a load. Anybody else catch a particular bargains?
