Title: Virgin Gas Tanks!!!
Post by: oil-lamp on July 19, 2016, 08:18:17 AM
That's right folks Virgin Steel Gas Tanks soon to be on the open market. Here's something I've been trying to do for the pass two years. I would say the late night meetings unmarked bags of money and the favors called in my have been a good thing. I hope as I am typing this the molds should be being filled with hot steel. Here's a photo of the molds. ;D

Sorry if they are large these were sent to me by the foundry owner.  ???

That is awesome Reese!  I think you will have a good market for these.  Any idea on a price?  Are you going to sell kits or have them built into full tanks for sale?  See you in Portland!

Why couldn't they have been stamped/pressed?  Was it because they are too "deep" and the steel used would have torn?  Just curious?

Looks like a press mold to me.

Those are press molds forms. We have the set for 20 gauge steel and will need to be heated red hot before pressing. Here's them just after they were poured today.

That's what I thought but, you had me wondering when you said "waiting to be filled with hot steel".  Should be a popular item.

Nice project.  Do you have a stamper lined up to do the pressings?  Have the expressed any concerns about the narrow end?  What  are you using for a stripper plate?

Mike all that is what I'm still going to be working on. My friend knows a lot of these things but these tanks were pressed once before by somebody. I think in this day and time it can be done. I may need some extra info or guidance so give a shout out on ant extra info out there. 8) I will listen.

Reese, I've been in manufacturing for 40 years & from my experience, when doing a deep draw, most tools will make a bigger  bump in the sheet first, to get the metal stretched out, then the forming tool will squish it back to the shape you want.  Trying to get all that metal stretched into that tight pointed end all in one draw might be a challenge.   Don't be afraid to push a little, then anneal, then repeat (several times maybe).  There's a film out there of all the steps it took to form the oil pan for a model T ford....back in those days they didn't have progressive tooling.  They annealed the pan several times as it slowly took shape.

Bottom line is this could be more labor intensive than you think.  Good luck.

Reese I'm really pulling for a big success on your tank production. If it weren't a difficult production piece others would have long ago produced them. It's such an elegant little tank that I'd like to use one on other frame styles as well. Though I'd have to modify with a frame tube tunnel to install. I wish you well in your endeavors.  Rick C.

Ok there poured and starting the clean-up process. They cut the riders off the back sides and they will need to be polished out to work easier. Getting close to the first stamping. Yea.  ;D

Wow, those are some massive risers.....shouldn't have too much shrink in your platten or form.

It'll take a few hours to work down the finish on those.  I don't know how many hours I put into that casting of a shotgun I made, but it was a bunch......

Sorry no updates yet. I've been snowed under with multiple life events the last several months.  I hope to clear some events soon but there's only one of me and only 24hrs in a day. I could use about 4X of each to be caught up by March. Lol

I will try to get a better update soon.

Well the dream is getting even closer. I was scheduled to pick them up last Saturday but we was rained out. I am hoping the weather holds this Saturday and I will have them on property. We are looking at using this press if it will hold the molds.
Wish me luck.

Hey Reese,  did you try pressing any tanks yet?

Ok I'm getting closer to going into production. I have been trying to get the press move the last two days and have made great progress so far. Well that is I have moved it a little over 12 feet closer to the barn. That's good seeing that I'm working with a bum knee that I reinjured Sunday a week ago putting my tent away. So I'm on track again along with the rebuild of the compact and the 56 with the Honda engine. So bare with me a little longer and hope to see y'all in July.  :P

Sounds good , Reese .
Except the part about a bum knee . I have one , too . :(
But I'm not trying to move heavy tank presses around .
Best of luck .

Pete . :)

Hi Reese, hope you heal up quickly.  This is going to be an exciting project if it works out!
Title: Re: Virgin Gas Tanks!!!
Post by: oil-lamp on March 27, 2018, 09:13:04 AM
Well it wouldn't have been a big deal but I had hurt my knee before I could even unload the tent and put it away. Now remember my tent is 20' X 40' and heavy. The press I'm having to move with a come-a-long one crank at a time. Let me tell you neither had been any fun.

20 x 40 ??? Reese , did you join the circus and just haven't told us yet ? LOL

No easier way to move that press ?

Pete . :)
Title: Re: Virgin Gas Tanks!!!

No I haven't join a circus and have not form one sense PT Barnum closed down. It's was purchased for family get-togethers. I tried to post a picture of it but it didn't like my format. The press, well it's like this it's on a uphill move tractor with bad brakes and nobody to help steady it while I move it.  So it's a little bit at a time.
Title: Re: Virgin Gas Tanks!!!
Post by: pd on March 27, 2018, 12:01:04 PM
So , I guess it'll get done when it gets done . ;)

If I were close , I'd give you a hand . But , we're in southern Arizona for a couple more weeks .
If you want , you can send that tent pic to me and I'll try switching the format . Then send it back so you can use it where ever you want .

Pete . :)

Ok Pd let me try this again. Here's the tent.

Circus tent .  Just kidding . :)

It looks to be a nice heavy duty tent .

Are those your hives in the background ?

Can you set the image size on your 'device' to something smaller ?

I use a host site : https://postimage.io/
I can have the pics sized upon upload . I always size them to 640x480 . Perfect for sites like this .

Pete . :)

Not my hives they are my wife's cousins hives. Well I guess there's two that came from my place lol. I have four hives in and around my place not to mention how many swarms that passed through the property. I'm trying to learn bee keeping if I can get past my fear of them. My old phone had settings on picture sizes but the new one doesn't.  :(  I know Portland is still a ways off but if life doesn't calm down around here I may have to miss it this year.  :'(  About getting a Mac I don't swing that way. Lol I do most of my work from my phone, it has autocorrect all the time. He he. All my schedule work for around the house just got a delay of game with rain storm today and hospital visit for Friday. Sure puts the breaks on the projects around here in a heartbeat. Wish me good fortunes in the coming weeks.

I have a question for the group???

Does anyone want to take over the gas tank project I have been trying to get going???

I will consider any offers I just don't have the time to do anything with it right now. I have been trying my best to get it up and running but there's way to many other chores and task that are talking all my time.
