Title: new owner
Post by: bilmart87 on September 27, 2012, 11:28:38 AM
I bought an old Simplex at a sale. Don't have pics yet, but number on frame is 18115. Curious what year it is. Has frame w/ wheels & seat...no engine or foot boards. Never seen one before, so just learning.  ???

Welcome to the group.  Your bike is a late model.  Does it have crash bars?  If there are no crash bars (and no footboards), it may be a sportsman.

Mike, did you ever do anything with those numbers I gave you?

No crash bars. I will try to get some pics up soon. Thanks for your response!

Rick, I am really behind on catching up with my play projects......work has had me traveling every week for the last few weeks (I spent the entire weekend at a factory near St. Louis 2 weeks ago, and was there this week (that's where my last post came from), and I've got to go back next week too.....).  As soon as I've got a little breathing room, I plan to update the registry with the new member's info along with what you got from Bob.

I took a few pics of the bike. Needs a lot of work! Can anyone tell me anything about this beast?

You have a rare bike there.  It's a late model Sportsman with the wide fenders & probably the big tires (27x3).  Only made in '59 & '60.  If you don't have the back fender, it will be really hard to find, but there are guys out there that could probably fabricate one (I wonder if Wayne has any?).

Check out the Vintage Motor Bike Club articles I posted in the manuals & such section.  They have a few pictures and descriptions of the late bikes.

I forgot to mention that those techy handlebars are somebodies invention & not original.....but don't throw away that throttle slide that's stuck on the one end. You'll need that later if want an original restoration.

That is really cool!  I agree with Mike, parts are going to be really hard to find.  I wonder if tires are available for those rims.  Those hubs look really beefy. I don't know if they take the same brakes as the earlier models.

According to the VMBC articles I posted, those front hubs are 2 rear brake hubs turned back to back, with only one side holding the brake shoes (I wonder why they didn't add a filler plate on the opposite side?).

I sure hope he calls the Orkin man before those bugs eat the bike!!!

Hey guys, thanks for the info. It's cool to find people who know so much about these things. Sounds like it's going to be a real challenge if this one is to be restored! We'll see...

This is the bike we are picking up this coming week..no luck finding an engine(stock) yet so still looking at that.  The fender on the rear is gonna be a pain too I guess.
There is a way though...2008 whizzer ambassadors and NER's have a fender set almost identical to what's on the 26" wheeled servi-cycle.  So that's an option if going the 26" route.  Also looking into having these hubs or moped hubs laced to 21x1.60 motorcycle rims....that gets us away from the higher priced cokers at 27".
When it gets here I'm gonna bend up a crash bar and stare at it ..tie wrapped on the frame.
