I picked this up many years ago and have not done a thing to it but make a mental plan for it's completion.
paint...I cant tell if original...if not it is very old and the bike was stripped of any original color
gas tank..chromed
luggage rack(not in pics) tubular type with V shaped mounting that comes up from underneath
no serial # that I can find...I did read posts on this site then go check

Pete, thanks..I over looked that thread...per that thread it is a 48
double hump spring, right side filler neck

Might be later than a '48 because of the kick start shaft. Somewhere in there they quit bolting the kicker shaft on. My '48 has the bolted on version. Take a look at my pics.

I agree with KartJockey. I vote 1949 Model K Deluxe. Only built for a couple of months. Did the bike come with wheels? I also think that is original paint. Check out the picture below of a Model K I used to own that looks like the same color.
BTW, I resized the photos for you.

My '57 M has a bolted shaft , exactly like in the M manual .

No exactly sure. I think they did both for awhile. I wonder why they changed? Seems to me, cheaper to manufacture if welded on, less machine operations and less hardware.

I think , because it is a wear item , it's much better to have the bolted shaft .
That method would also provide another possible revenue for the company even though it might have cost a few pennies more to produce it that way . Then again , if you weigh the cost and time it takes to weld as opposed to simply slipping a bolt and into place ...

It is much faster to make one weld than to drill a hole in the frame, then another in the shaft, then bolt it together.
It definitely makes replacement much easier, but I am not sure simplex ever thought a kick start shaft would wear out.

Thanks....whats pictured is what I got(rear luggage rack isnt in the pics)...no wheels, no engine, no drive
I dont have any plans to make it a resto....what I have in mine for it though destroy it from 1 day being a resto candidate if ever that may occur. It will be a haff breed, cross bread, inbread, mish mash, mutt of things....but plans are to do it tastefully and eye appealing...so it looks good and is usable as a nice rider. I'll get right on it once the 3 Cushmans in pieces are completed

The plan is for the Cushmans will be done by May 14.(for their national event)
I've fitting many items to the Simplex, bought most of whats needed to complete it...just need those 48 hr days to begin, so I have time to finish it..lol

I use to use a lot of those kind of days , but I'm retired now and ... well , sometimes I think they still show up once in while even though I didn't ask for them . ;)

Regarding those comments about bolt on kick starters, to clarify:
The early bolt on had u-bolts to secure the shaft to the frame. In the later bikes they stuck the shaft thru a drilled hole & used one single bolt thru the motor plate to secure it, then they went to no bolt and just welded it to the bottom of the plate (to make it real fun, some bikes had both a bolt and weld.....my '57 is an example of that).

My 1949 was welded, but my 1953 and 1955 are both bolt on.
