Frame, Tank, Seat, Controls, Etc / Re: Fender restoration
« on: July 06, 2012, 03:29:50 PM »

About these fender screws  ... I need your opinion.  Should I use chrome or polished stainless ..... or should I paint the screws to match the fender.  Shiny usually looks good but can be "too much"   My brace has a factory bend for clearance ....  I am going to use some thin fibre washers between the brace and fender like Mike.
Anyway .... tell me what will look best on the rear.   Thanks, and I will definitely take your advise.......... unless my wife says "no"      wk

Thanks.

The pulley is adjustable ...meaning that it will spread apart allowing the belt to ride down very low in the pulley.  In that position, there will be a wide separation of the pulley near the center shaft.  The pulley can be narrowed causing the belt to ride very high near the outer edge.  That make the single pulley function as if it were both large and small.  To have the correct adjustment, there has to be be a base width measurement taken when the two sides almost touch near the shaft.  These things are widely used on farm equipment for a variable speed drive.  Does this make sense?

Other Things Simplex / Re: muffler can dimention

&^%$ Larry, it ain't "dimention", it's spelled "dementia".  The dementia of the can is 4" x 7 3/4".   Add 1/16 to each of these to include the crimped/welded bead around the ends.

Hey Larry thanks for the input ....I had new plug and gap on my mind.  OK, you guys go with 50 to 1 mix ....but what octane to you use?  I run some Stihl equipment and the 3 dealers in this area require 89 or better octane for their 2cycle engines.  One independent shop reccomended higher.

Thank you,Rick.  Bill's wife was pretty understanding to let him use her oven to heat the parts!  I know.  Wish we could all get together and walk through that barn in Iowa.

OK Oil-Lamp ... your testimony along with the cost made the decision for me. Thanks to all of you .... and I am also going to powdercoat the rims ....I see chrome is not good idea.

However, I just filled my truck with $3.93 gasoline, so I may postpone working on the

I am concerned about the smooth finish.  However these guys painted a Honda tank for me; it was perfect so they know what I expect.  They use a metal filler like Lab Metal but a different supplier, but if it needs much filler, I paint it.  Miike, $350 would be a good price here; tanks in one color start about $400+.  Oil-lamp, were you happy with the texture of the job? ... I'm looking at one color, (black) ...then outline the tank in a stripe, decal and clear.

I'm considering chrome on the wheels ...what do you guys think? I'm going to respoke anyway.

Restoration Projects / Paint or Powder Coat The Tank?
« on: April 01, 2012, 12:41:25 PM »

On past projects, I have had the frame powder-coated and the tank and fenders painted.  I am starting on a Simplex.  ABC PowderCoating also does paint in their rod shop operation.  The owner wants to powder the tank and fenders; he will do any striping or decal work and clear the entire project.  This would be much cheaper for me.  I just never heard of nor thought of this.  Do you have any opinions?  Thanks.

Other Things Simplex / Re: Title Issues
« on: March 20, 2012, 10:45:27 AM »
In Texas, our auto registeration is handled through the office of the county Tax Accessor/Collector.  There is a form that this office provides for obtaining a motor vehicle title.  The form is partially filled out by a law enforcement officer who runs the VIN number of the vehicle and determines that there is not a recorded title nor outstanding fines.  The tax accessor then inspects the vehicle, makes a picture of the serial number and completes the remainder of the one-page form.  I believe the total cost is $2.00 and you receive the title within a week.  I have done this with Bultaco motorcycles ....most of which were never titled, but now must be if ridden off road on federal land. This process is called a tax-title-hearing. I plan to do this with the 52 Simplex

Rick, I can't help you, but I do look forward to reading replies, and I thank you for posting the question.  I will be painting my 52 soon and will not necessarily look for originality but want a sharp appearance and need ideas ...   Thanks again.

I'm new to Simplex but have restored Bultaco's and Honda.  I bought a 52 Simplex on Craigslist and will pick up in two weeks.  I appreciate access to this site and have read most of the posts ...look forward to buying XL Tshirts, seeking advise and helping support the site.  (By the way, I am 74 ...do I win old guy award?)
