Restoration Projects / New Orleans Build Thread
« on: April 28, 2017, 01:16:37 PM »

I was rightly shamed into creating this...

Some of you may know I purchased a complete simplex that was listed on here a while back.

This is what showed up.

I was told it was perfect but the crash bars were slightly used. I didn't want to restore a bike with such a glaring flaw so I had to remedy that. Since I'm bound and determined to do everything myself at my own peril I didn't want to just buy them. That would be like admitting defeat. Roughly a year later here I am in the same situation.

I cut the bent crash bars off the bike I purchased and finally just ordered a set from Wayne. It's been a bit frustrating for me as I've been looking at a disassembled Simplex stare at me from across the room for a while screaming "SAVE ME".  Once I get the Crash bars I should be on track to get started. I have most everything else. (Placeholder to describe just how wrong the previous sentence was).

Once I get the crash bars I'll weld them up and sandblast and so forth. I'm on the fence about painting vs powder coating. Anyone have an opinion?

Frame, Tank, Seat, Controls, Etc / Frame bend radius
« on: October 13, 2016, 10:32:22 AM »
Does anyone know what the bend radius is on the simplex frames? I have a buddy that bought a frame and wants to do something with it. The problem is the bend below the motor is halfway rusted through. I was planning on sectioning that piece out and welding in an new piece. It sure would help if I knew what radius shoe was needed to make that bend.

Any ideas?

Frame, Tank, Seat, Controls, Etc / New Crash Bars
« on: August 23, 2016, 08:11:33 AM »
I purchased a simplex a few months ago. The crash bars were "gently used" and are bent. I don't want to restore a bike with a bent frame component.
It's not looking like they can be bent back into shape sufficiently to look unbent.

I could probably go through the trouble of finding the tubing and a sufficient bender to bend some more. Before I do that, does anyone sell something like that? I'd rather just cut the bent one off and weld on a new one.

Frame, Tank, Seat, Controls, Etc / Tubing thickness?
« on: May 25, 2016, 05:52:45 PM »
Anyone know the thickness of tubing used for the frames? I measured .080 but that seems to be an oddball size.

whoever had the simplex before I bought it used the crash bars at least once and it shows. I'm going to cut off the bent bars and install some new bars.

Other Things Simplex / Best way to ship a simplex?
« on: May 01, 2016, 02:06:08 PM »
Anyone Know the best way (most economical) way to ship a simplex. It's in pieces so it can be spread across a few boxes. I just don't want to pay a fortune to get it here. I'm not really worried how long it takes.

Any ideas?

Simplexes with Non-Original Engines / Honda GC 190 info
« on: April 16, 2016, 09:44:49 AM »
I'm on the path to build a simplex and would really like to use the Honda GC series engine. I am entertaining the thought of an electric start because I think my wife is going to end up with this Simplex and I'm going to build a second one in the future. Because of this I want to put an electric start on it.

Plastered all over the internet and Honda's website are things that say that the electric start on the GC models are an option. I have had NO luck finding this elusive engine. I called Honda and they passed me to a regional distributor. I called those folks and they spent about 45 minutes on the phone with me trying to help. (RW Distributors). I thought folks here might be interested in what they told me.

Here's where we landed. Honda did/does indeed make a GC-190 engine with an electric start. The distributor didn't have the capacity to order one. He said they were probably made for a third party manufacturer and would have to be purchased from them if I could figure out who it was. Alternatively he said I could get a standard GC190 and order the parts from the third party manufacturer.

He said there are three GC 190 models with electric start.

GC190 QAE2 -  Here is the parts list for this motor. http://www.partspitstop.com/oemparts/#/l/hen/50947557f8700230ac8cc3a8/gc190a-qea2-parts I agreement with what Rick wrote below the QAE2 was listed as being the standard equipment for the HS520K1 ASA Snowblower. It's 120v AC.

GC190 QAEF - Here is a parts list for this motor. http://www.ereplacementparts.com/honda-gc190a-type-qhafvin-gcaaa10000011496156-small-engine-parts-c-37657_37658_37987_37755.html

GC190 QEA - Here is the parts list for this motor. http://www.kenssportsarcticcatparts.com/oemparts/l/hen/50947552f8700230ac8cc388/gc190a-qea-parts

I looked around and it appears that the flywheel is discontinued on the parts breakdowns for these engines. In addition at least one of these engines uses 120v AC starter. It's weird but it's on a snowblower and I guess that makes sense. Here is the snow blower http://powerequipment.honda.com/snowblowers/models/hs720as.

What I am going to do is look at all of the electric charging/starting kits on Amazon and cross reference the engines they are for and look for ones that have the same part number as the starter listed on those parts sites above. I'm thinking that may indicate the flywheel and associated components may fit as well.

Wheels & Tires / Bolt in replacement wheels?
« on: April 10, 2016, 01:37:01 PM »
I read that folks are using the worksman wheels in their builds. Folks that have done this, are you changing the axles and other parts to fit?

I purchased the 77A model wheel from worksman. It fits the front forks just fine. I'm going to have to change the axle or add some bushings to the forks to fit the diameter of the axle. In addition I'll have to play with the brake lever a bit but it looks ok.

For the rear wheel, the distance between the rear dropouts is 6". The 77A stock rim won't work without changing the axle.

Is there something else you guys are running for a rear wheels that works better? Is the 6" distance between the rear dropouts on my simplex frame sound right?

Buy, Sell, Trade / I need lots of stuff
« on: March 14, 2016, 08:16:49 AM »

I have what I believe to be a 40's H model frame and gas tank. I am going to put non original stuff on it but I think that the fenders Handlebars, Handlebar riser and Seat pan are needed to keep the mostly original look.

So, that's what I'm looking to buy:

Seat Pan
Handlebars
Handlebar riser
Front Fender
Rear Fender

If you have one you would be willing to part with or you know of a good source, I'd appreciate it.

Wheels & Tires / Wheel Brainstorming Idea
« on: January 05, 2016, 09:50:17 AM »
I've only posted one other time so Hi everyone!

I think I've read every post on the site and one thing that keeps coming up is a good supply for tires acceptable for use. I know Coker makes one but they are a bit spendy.

In planning for my build (Which currently consists of a frame forks included) I've been thinking about my wheels. I want something that will withstand New Orleans famous potholes. That leads me away from the standard bicycle solution. I feel that any change in tire size will negatively effect the looks of the cycle.

After much reading I found out that simplex and older scooter/moped tires are sized based on the outside diameter of the tire. At some point they changed this because current tires are sized based on the dimension of the inside diameter or tire bead.

With that in mind I started looking for similarities. It turns out that a 21" motorcycle rim has a fairly large selection of tires available. These are a large number DOT approved as well. I'm pretty sure it's the chosen size for narrow Harley type "Chopper" wheels.

Honda makes a 21" 36 spoke rim but I'm not sure what it was originally on. If that were mated to a 50cc honda dirt bike drum brake/hub it might make a nice set up for a simplex. I think both parts are easily obtained. I'm not sure about the spokes but I think that could be managed.

Just a though, but has anyone else explored this?

Thanks!
