Restoration Projects / Resurrection- NEED HELP
« on: July 11, 2019, 02:07:31 PM »
I purchased a rolling chassis years ago and disassembled it in hopes of restoring it. My plans took an indefinite hiatus (divorce).... and now, I think I'm ready to give this thing a go. I planned on doing a resto-mod (even went as far as ordering the kickstart and harbor freight setup from Wayne Mahaffey), and I think that's still the direction I want to go in.

I pretty much have all the parts Wayne sent me sitting in a box in storage... and it's killing me.

I'm apprehensive about trying to assemble this, but I don't want it to sit either.... does anybody know of any simplex aficionado's in the Los Angeles area that can help me get that fire back in my gut to get my bike on the road?

I plan on running Worksman wheels and a harbor freight motor with the kick start, i just need to get it going.... looking for any ideas/pointers!!!

thank you!

Other Things Simplex / gas caps needed
« on: February 08, 2017, 03:22:03 PM »
After two plus years, I am back on the boards. I need some help, I bought a rolling project and it didn't have the two gas caps. Anybody have a lead as to where I can find something that will fit?

thanks!

Mike

That's either a 64 or 65 T-Bird next to the Studebaker. I used to have Alan Ladd's 61 T-Bird. One of his close friends procured it after he "passed away" in Palm Springs, CA. I picked her up for $1100 with only 18k original miles... man do i miss that car.

What i can say is this. I am in my early 30's and have wanted a Simplex for a few years. Living in Los Angeles, Simplex's are like hens teeth out here. I managed to find my first one out in Adrian, Mi. It had a Kohler engine in it and was a basic daily rider. I drove over 2000 miles to visit family and trucked that bike all the way back here. I didn't feel as attached to the bike due to the fact I didn't build it. An offer was thrown at me that I couldn't refuse, so I let her go. Now, I bought a frame from Missouri and had her shipped all the way out to California. I could have sat around for months, waiting for someone to post a tired, old Simplex motor. Instead, I went to the source, Wayne. Wayne told me that there was a motor that was more durable, faster, cheaper and overall a much better choice.... that was the HF212.

So, to all the nay-sayers... I am roughly half the age of some of the guys on this page. I have come to realize that these bikes are few and far between, especially in my neck of the woods. That being said, I'd rather salvage a rolling chassis and get her back on the road, than to see her waste away in some guys shed. Don't knock me for the choice to use a Jap motor. If I come across a better engine in the future or an original engine at a killer price... i'll probably go that route. Until then, let me enjoy my bike.

thank you for your understanding and have a Merry Christmas.

Other Things Simplex / Re: Servi Cycle shirts, an early Christmas gift

I bought a poor quality decal on ebay. The wife took it to the shop and had them scan it and clean it up. It's the standard stuff that they use on T-shirts.

The shirts were made at a local sign shop. He charged $20 a shirt and she provided the shirt (i wear a 2xl-tall). After I got them I went back to the shop; the guy said he can make the tank decal and it would be layered and could be cleared over. that would give an appearance that would me more paint like than a standard print decal.

Wheels & Tires / rear sheave, paint or powder coat
« on: November 20, 2014, 07:48:55 AM »
I received my rear sheave in the mail yesterday from Wayne. It is a repop, but it looks to be fairly good quality. My question is, should I paint or powder coat the sheave? i'm planning on powder coating the frame and wheels all black... just curious which would work best, considering the belt will be wearing on it.

Simplexes with Non-Original Engines / Re: Conversion
« on: November 13, 2014, 01:27:28 PM »
The jackshaft bar that Wayne sent is very long. it sticks out the side a lot. Is this something that can be trimmed down so it doesn't stick out so far? I don't want to compromise the integrity or balance of the shaft.....

DW, if you do plan on making that decal, could you let me know? i'd like to get a scaled down size sticker to put on the tank of my 48 safti cycle... i wish i could have found an early model like yours; but when it comes to safti cycles, beggars can't be choosers.
