Title: Wacky idea for engine conversion
Post by: ltcps on January 22, 2013, 08:26:13 PM
Boy sometimes I worry about my sanity! Just got done searching for electric hub motor conversions on bicycles and the idea of converting my Servi-cycle to electric drive struck a nerve!

A 1000 watt or larger hub electric motor on the rear seems like it MIGHT have merit. Maybe another one on the front because of weight of the bike and rider assuming  strong enough wheels are used.

There would be plenty of room left for all kinds of battery storage and controllers.

Not really serious yet but after spending 50 years in computers and electronics there is a spark (pun intended).

Give it a thought. I think it could be done for under a couple of thousand.  Hey I'm retired and what else is there to do in the winter?

Although fleshing out the idea might be fun, I have to say that my opinion is that the "look" of a Simplex deserves the sound of a real motor rather than the hum of an electric one.

@itcps:
I'm working on that very idea right now. I'm designing a Simplex tribute/look-a-like that would allow for different motor configurations. I've designed a mid-drive electric system, but could definitely use help with the controller side of the operation.

@Mike:
I'm with you..I love the smell of two stroke in the morning.  ;D
But there are people out there that don't. (maybe use cards on the spokes?!!)

As great at that movie was, I ran across a tape of it a few weeks ago & it just doesn't seem the same anymore.....

You have to promise me you'll clip on a playing card to catch the spokes if you go with the electric mojo.....there will be a bad shift in the force if you don't.

Check out Juicer 48 on youtube. The motor/battery setup is bad ass.

IF you could do something like this, I say go ahead.
