Photo Gallery / Georgia Winter Ride
« on: February 08, 2015, 03:45:17 PM »
Took the Wizard for a ride today. Put a reproduction carb on, put a compression stuffer plus a new cover, cleaned and sealed the tank, replaced the throttle and choke cables, repaired the threads on the flywheel to hold the pinion gear and off she goes. I also pulled the jug and cleaned the old carbon deposits. Starts on third kick every time.

Thanks for the info on the reproduction carb Rick.
The Wizard lives and I took it for a spin today.
I still need to wire up the lights but I've already got the wires pulled so I'm off to the garage to hook them up.
Got sidetracked by a company meeting in Vegas. The meeting was same old same old but Vegas is always fun.
I didn't get to see Chumlee but made it to Pawn Stars.

Looks good. I could always use a couple of good fenders.

You've been hiding that coupe from me.
I chipped a front tooth trying to ride a sled backwards one winter in Missouri where I'm originally from.
Didn't try that anymore.

I got a chance to take a couple of rides today.
All the neighbors seem to come out and watch when I get the bikes out.

I got the repro carb from Carpenter's in two days time.
I plan on making the needed changes and install today.
Still waiting on the gas tank sealer but with some luck I'll have the Wizard on the road before the weekend passes.

May the New Year bring you all the Simplex parts you need for your restoration projects.

That's kind of what I thought although the original paint on the hub is the Simplex color so I'm a bit confused.
I just might take you up on the hub and appreciate the offer.

It is a single track clutch, has the barbell type weights.

My plans are to be in Portland this year with my bikes.

Attached is a pic of the Wizard front hub and one of a regular Simplex hub.

I may call Wayne about this one or take this bike over for him to gaze at this weekend.

The front hub is very unusual. It is only 1 1/4" in width compared to any other of my Simplex front hubs. They all measure right at 2 1/2" wide.
Also the handlebar plate is curved which I was under the assumption this went away in 1953ish.
The Wizard Automatic emblem appears to be original to the bike and the paint is definitely original. There is no trace of the decal being replaced.
I have also been told Western Auto only sold these for one year although I'm not sure of the year. any literature I've found just states they sold them in the mid-fifties.
It does not have a tab for a brake light mount at all, not sure if that helps determine the year but for what it's worth.

I ordered a carb from Carpenter's today and have the tank clean and prepped to be sealed.

Thanks again Rick.
I misunderstood when you stated search the main page but should have known you meant here.

Here's a couple pics of the Wizard I picked up.

Thanks Rick.
The MS carbs do have a spring in the bottom that return them to full open. I can see how the arm on top being on the wrong side would cause the throttle to work backwards.

I couldn't find any info on Carpenter's website as far ass Simplex modification goes. Probably just not looking in the right place.
I'll call them tomorrow and discuss but if the throttle arm can be adjusted it should work.
Have you actually used one of their carbs?

Thanks Rick. I believe I meant to state the Simplex MT and MS carbs are spring loaded to the open position rather than closed. When you insert the throttle cable to attach you actually pull the throttle closed and tighten down the hold screw.
I'll look closer at the main page comparison and modification.

I picked up what I believe is a '53 Wizard Automatic complete and untouched other than someone has put some other carb on it. It's been sitting quite a while but I shot some starting fluid in it and it fired right up.

Need to clean out the tank and coat it, clean the fuel bowl and rewire the switch and lights but the motor appears to be in great condition and has no broken fins.

Frame # 09023
Motor # 17330B

Thanks Again

Does anyone know if the MT carbs that Dennis Carpenter sales which are actually for Cushman's compatible with Simplex?
They look exactly like the MT1 carbs I only wonder if they are spring loaded closed as the Simplex carbs are.
