The last thing I heard from Gary was that his health is kinda fragile also and he is battling cancer. He said he was putting everything on hold for a time. I do not know what his status is at this time.

Wow, you are spending some money. I recently saw a gas tank on Ebay, but it went out high.
Let me ask you a question about welding the frame. I have seen, on other forums, where the guys have raved about brazing the frame rather than arc welding. However, it would appear that the tolerances have to be very tight for brazing to work. I see you are mig/arc welding your joints.

According to what I have gathered from the other guys this type of welding weakens the frame, but I would think that the heat generated to braze the joints would weaken it also if this were the case. Also, I can't see how a brazed joint would be stronger than a weld.

What do you think of these arguments one way or the other?

What are your thoughts on this?

Hi Rick. Remember some time ago I got my Simplex that I had purchased and put it in the kitchen? Shortly thereafter I had some health probs and that darn thing is still sitting there. My shop expansion came to a screeching halt and most other activities. About all I am doing right now is flapping my jaws about what I would like to do and enjoying the activities of others with various bikes here and there. I especially like your project and only wish I could participate. Hopefully, I will be able to take a more active participation in the near future, but until that time I am chair bound :/

Regarding Harbor Freight, that is my favorite place and nearly all of my tools and equipment came from there. I have bought a few that proved to be duds, but they will make them good. I have not found any place that will beat their prices and the staff are friendly and for the most part knowlegable.

Rick, That is definately 1st class all the way. I'm really looking forward to seeing this build to the end. No rear wheel assy here. Sounds like you may be talking to Wayne again :)

Rick, what size pipe are you using and what is your source of supply?

It's looking so good Rick. I have finally finished the bike for my nephew, but a bout of double pneumonia has slowed me up some. I hope to get started on my bike by the end of the week.

Hi Rick. That table is about 2 1/2' x 18"  One of the neat things about it is that it is that it has wheels and can be turned to any angle. A strap would lock the bike down. If I had the room for a motorcycle lift they run about $500.

My shop space is limited and I would hate to tie up a bunch of space (and money) in a work station that is devoted to only one project. I have been looking at various things that I could use as a motorcycle lift and other projects also. If I do have to limit it to only a motorcycle I would like to keep it's shop presence to a minimum. What do you think of these three items as lifts. In order, #1 lifts 2' high and costs $80, #2 lifts 27"high and costs $160, #3 lifts 30" high and costs $180

Rick, That is looking really good. I like the way you have everything balanced and leveled. Have you been able to get any hard measurements yet or are you going to wing it? What have you decided to do about a differential? Are you going to use belts throuout or any chains? If you don't have any measurements perhaps Bill might give you the rough dimensions or Wayne. I really want to see your progress on the bike.

My bike is still sitting in the kitchen :-[ Hopefully I will be able to get it in the shop over the weekend.

I can see the rear operated brake pedal in this pic from the military brochure and there is another pedal of some sort directly behind the foot board, but I don't see the kick start. You can also see the oversized muffler in this photo.

I have another bike I have to finish up before I can start on this on. I am so hoping there is a compression plate under this one. The motor has obviously been run and I can't see it running without that plate. I will see shortly.

My Simplex Bike finally arrived. It has been enroute for 2 weeks. I had visions of it bouncing around in the back of a truck and beat to crap. Instead it was in the back of an enclosed trailer which was packed full of motorcycles. Each bike was locked down at 4 points and the guy definately knew exactly what he is doing. I would have no problems shipping with him anyplace he goes. Anyway it is sitting in the kitchen (which tickled the wife to no end) and I will be seeing what it is going to take to get it running sometime in the next week or two. Here it is.

Here is a photo of a Chaplin riding a Simplex. Notice the lack of crash bars, 2 piece front fender supports and blacked out headlight. The exact leather saddle bags are avaliable as repops. These bikes also had very large mufflers with a wire mesh cone shaped spark arrestor on them.

Rick I am working on copying the book. It's going to take awhile. This thing is about 90 pages.
