The majority of original "board track racers" had no brakes, no clutch, no suspension and no throttle (only a kill switch to slow down)  they were push start (without compression release); they were direct drive with high gear only. They were built with one purpose; to run all out on a board track.

I suppose a person building a replica could add anything he wanted; probably brakes and throttle would be a good idea. That little skinny seat won't do your backside any favors either and bent over far enough to hold those droop handle bars might get old after a few miles; and then there is insurance, inspection, title and registration which seems to be out of reach in most states as stated above.

I have seen several of the Phoenix bikes and they are really well built.  I think if I built one with a whizzer motor, I could probably get it registered in NY.

This one from Portland was really well done, but looked like it was never ridden.

I personally like the color on this one, and check out the girder front end.

They're as roadworthy as any simplex and won't struggle to get up and go.  Those phoenix bikes in particular mostly have whizzer engines, getting the benefit of that charging system to light up any lights used. They out stop the older bikes too and have a front suspension.
The bike that really beats em all turn key? Whizzer

In Michigan I think you can run them as "motor assisted bicycles" without much trouble.

If I didn't have 3 projects already in line, I might order one.
