Portland 2014
« on: June 17, 2014, 09:45:05 AM »
I received my camping pass and new membership card the other day. Down to about a month now! The dates I have are July 19th to the 22nd.  Do we all agree? I will travel during the day Friday and get there Friday early enough to get near the 'hill'.  Took the '48 for a ride and all is well. The 'S2' is not back from the powder coaters. it seems he had to go off and get married then go on a honeymoon!  But we are in contact and assures me I will have it soon.

I plan on being there Friday evening also.  It doesn't look like the Sportsman will be running after all.  I have been working on it, and went to start it today.  The repair to the key way on the crank that a previous owner made did not hold.  I will call Wayne in the morning, but I doubt he has a crank for this motor.

Can your crank be re-repaired? Does the keyway have one good side to it? Maybe we could TIG weld for a good clean weld then skin the  keyway back out and refinish the diameter. Download a pic.

The key way is a mess, all torn up on both sides.  I will bring it to Portland and we can look at it.  I am at work, I will post a picture tomorrow.

go-kart guys used to use lapping compound and lap the taper and then skip the key so they could adjust the timing where they wanted it. If you end up having to use it we would have to relocate keyway location somehow.

It might be that they left a very small amount of compound on it for grip then tightened the flywheel on.

Agree that if things aren't made worse (warpage), you should be able to tig up the sides & recut the keyway.

The original repair was brazing.  It was a poor job to start, but I was being hopeful.  I also think the crank snout may have been shortened a thread or two.  I will pull the motor back out this weekend and take the crank out.

Is there no one camping? What is with you weenies???lol We are gonna stay in our enclosed trailer like we did last year,We are leaving Wednesday and will prob stay in a motel somewhere along the way, so should be there in good time on thurs before the official start. Everybody needs to chime in with when they want to have the group photo, I think either Sat afternoon or Sunday afternoon would be best, I know Rick had mentioned Sunday in another post. I think what ever day, it should be around 3 pm. I want to start announcing the day and time as soon as possible. Lets get as many Simplex's there as possible. It was a blast last year, and we only announced it about an hour b4 the photo.
