I tried to post under "New Members" but for some reason could not find a "new post" option there. In any event, I've joined. I live in Fort Worth, TX. I've had my Model L (may be an M) for a little over six years. Larry Brown helped put it in running condition, and I'm glad to see his posts here. How are you Larry? The Chinese tires finally gave up the ghost, so I've ordered new ones, plus a carburetor, from Wayne. I'm glad to see so much interest in Servi-Cycles and hope we can all get together at some point.

Welcome! The reason you could not find a "new post" button under the new member post is because it is already a topic. You just need to "reply" to topic to post.
If you can, come to the VMBC meet in Portland, IN in july. I think we will have a dozen members of this site there.

Here's the standard question......what is your motor number and frame number (if it has one)?
thanks,

Hi, I'm also new here, mostly interested in Military Simplexes, have one postwar frame for parts, and a wartime, without any crash bars, looking for pictures of the folding footboards if anyone has seen any? on mine there's nothing there!
Engine, only have one incomplete unit, looking for Wico flywheel, from what I've gathered here, everybody is!
Thanks,
Alex Schmidt

Bill Erickson, from Illinois, is restoring a '37 model at the moment. Does it have the same type foot pegs your interested in? If so, check out his webpage & contact him (he's usually the first hit that comes up on a simplex search).

Mike: The engine number is L11096M. Cannot locate a serial # on the frame.

CL, thanks for the number. You probably don't have a frame number, as they didn't start that until about 51 witht the M series.

Cl, Bill Marcum thats me. If yo are looking for a frame no. Like I was, I could not find it till I turned the frame over and there it was. On the bottom of the neck. I am posting a picture to help if you have a number. Welcome to the site . Bill Marcum 8)

Bill & CL, that plate & number didn't start showing up until about the 1951 model year.
CL's "L" motor indicates a bike made from mid-1949 thru mid-1950 (this is of course, dependant on whether it's the original engine or not).
CL, can you post some pictures of the bike? Does it have the latch on the foot pedal to hold the gear positions? Does your bike have the 2" wide rims?
Mike Sal

Mike, he posted 1 picture above. It has the 2" wheels, and it looks like it has the latch to hold it in gear. I would venture a guess that the engine is the original.

Oops, forgot about his pic.....nothin' gets past this guy, eh?
I had stated the L model was thru 50, but a closer look at the Wollard book says thru '51. Since his bike has the winged decal, I'd say it's an early L model.

Hi Sal, No there should be no footpegs but footboards, the early type, but then folding, they fold up, to make the Simplex less wide to transport, will see if I can make a scan from the parts book, but it's not very clear.
Also will have a look at the engine number.

Mike and Alex, thanks for the excellent information. Very helpful.
The footboards do not, however, fold up - at least I don't think they do! I'll check.

Hi All,
New to the forum, I was researching Simplex Servicycles and found it. My older brother had a literal 'basket case' pre-1945 bike he restored in the mid 1960s we used to ride. It's long gone now, but I was wondering is anyone had frame specs and measurements. I've been toying with building a large scale model of a servicycle as a project, and measurements and drawings would be easier to work with than working from photos and memory. Very cool site BTW!
Thanks,
JZ

Welcome to the group. Hopefully a couple of guys will be able to chime in with the contact info, but there was a guy who built reproductions of Simplex's a few years ago, so I'd guess he has drawings & measurements. His finished costs were just too hi to support his business model I think.

Thanks for the response, Mike. I hope to see some responses so I can move forward on the idea. I have grand kids who'd get a charge out of something like this, especially a 1/2 or 3/4 scale truck version...

Welcome JZ. I haven't come across any blueprints, but I may be able to give you some help. What specs would you like?
Rick

Hello ,
My name is Adam Smalley. I also am a new member. Trying to buy a 53 model.Dont know much about them but I know I love the way they look.
-
Rick,
Some basic frame measurements, spacing between frame loops would help. If you have a trike, the box loop dimensions would be good too. I can probably work off of photos once I have some basic measurements and scale up/down from there.
Thanks for the offer!

Welcome Adam, if you don't know much about them you are in the right place! Enjoy the read, plenty of stuff on this site to keep you busy!
-
Hi JZ,
Here are some specs for you.
Neck 1 3/4" wide
Seat spring 1 1/2 wide
frame @ neck 4" to outside of tube
frame @ rear axle 7 1/2" to outside of tube
Crash Bars 23" wide
lower frame rails 23" from center of bend
upper frame rail 35" from center of bend
Down tubes 20" from crash bars downward.
I don't think I would scale this down much, as you need the room for whatever motor you chose to run. What size wheels are you thinking of using? Take a look at my simplex 3 wheel tribute thread and you can get an idea of what I did to build a truck. I did not have any exact measurements, but I think I've come close.

Willkommen to the new Bewerberen. One idea for a reduced size bike project would be to take a sportsman senior & make a truck out of it. Smaller profile but still has the Simplex look. Ya gotta wonder if Treen built any prototypes of one.
Mike Sal

Rick,
I was thinking 20" wheels and using one of the small motorized bike engines, which would make it about 3/4 scale. A motorized bike kit engine would still fit in the downsized frame (at this point it's still total S.W.A.G. until i get something down on paper).

Those small 2 stroke chinese engines need pedal power to get started I believe. Just something to consider. Maybe one of those 2 hp harbor freight engines would work.
Rick

The pricier kits have some chinese ohv 4 strokes with a centrifugal clutch, probably the same engines.
