New from Oregon
« on: April 21, 2013, 11:30:19 AM »
Hi,
I am new here but not to the world of Motorcycles. I have two simplex's, both of them automatics. I am in the process of rebuilding the one that I believe is a 53 right now and after I get this one done I will start on the one that I think is a 58-59. I have not touched it yet as I'm keeping it together for reference reasons.

Welcome!  When you get a chance, post the frame and engine numbers and we can help you verify the years.

The numbers for the one I believe to be a 53 are 07114 frame and M15040B for the motor. The other one is 14137 frame # and M22792B for the motor.
I'll try post a couple of pictures.

I think you are right on the 1953, but the second is most likely a 1956 model.

Welcome Rich.  I think we have a few others from the PNW too.  I think your older bike might be a very late '53 or an early '54 (as far as manufacture....depending on when it was sold is when it would have been titled).

I agree that the later bike is most probably a '56.  Again, in the later years it was very common that left over bikes from one calendar year were sold as the next year's models.  Does your bike have the Phelon Magneto (3 clips on the cover instead of many screws)?  Is the brake light switch mounted on top (right behind the motor) or on bottom of the rear lower frame rail?

Hopefully the pictures are going to post this time.
Mike, the magneto is the Phelon, I'm not sure about the brake switch.

Hi, Rich-
Welcome to the site! I just saw your post. Whereabouts in Oregon? I'm just South of Portland. I'll be putting my '49 Simplex together this Summer and hopefully have it up and running in time for the Iron Ranch Swap Meet in Ridgefield Wash. this September.

I'm in Newport. If you ever get over here stop by R. R. Hawg Shop. I'm hoping to get the 53 done for the Dixon swap meet in the middle of June. I'm not aware of the Ranch swap meet.
