Since the last post was 1.5 years ago, are we to assume this is another of his projects that he didn't finish?

Could well be , Rick .
Maybe I'll ask if that was the case . ;)

Frame, Tank, Seat, Controls, Etc / Re: Tank Sealing
« on: November 09, 2023, 01:59:38 PM »
My '57 tank had enough rust that I didn't want to run it .

I treated it with Wood Bleach ( Oxalic acid ) and it truned out right .

I did not use any sealer after that^ .

I have used RedKote on my 'Swiss cheese' 1989 Yamaha XT 350 gas tank , which turned out good .
RedKote is fairly 'runny' . Enough so that I think it would run through the holes at the top of the tank divider .
Sure , it would take a bit of patience , but ...
I think that^ because I drained the excess RedKote out of the XT tank through its petcock mount hole . That hole is about 1/2" x  1 1/2" or less , which seems smaller than some of the hols in the divider .
RedKote can be thinned slightly with MEK or acetone .

Thank you all.  It was way too much work for such a simple mistake.
Scooter

Ha . The work was your 'reward' and insurance against you making the mistake again . ;)

Interesting .
I'm guessing someone has been in that motor before .
Looks like a roller bearing . Very doubtful the factory installed it . Pretty sure they used only ball bearings .
Most likely , there will be a # stamped on the outer race edge .  What is it ?

And , how much is 'a lot' of end play ?

Engine & Transmission / Re: Fast rotating rings
« on: October 23, 2023, 11:47:32 AM »
See the original entry in this string.  Long story short, rings got caught in exhaust ports and broke themselves and the land between the ring grooves.

Ah , yes , I recall . Now that you help my memory . LOL
One of the benefits of getting old .

Anyone have a standard size piston with 5/64" ring grooves they would like to sell?
I find myself badly in need of one.
Thanks.

What happened ?

I did get an amperage measurement of 1.03 amps on the headlight coil.  Explains why it will light the Sylvania 5.3 watt, but not the 16.8 watt.
I will unwind the coil and replace with new wire when I get a chance.  I did find that Phelon made three different coils for the simplex depending on year, but I do not know what is different.
Thank you,
Scooter

I unwound my nonfunctional HL coil onto a tomato tower ( cage ) and simply painted it with regular Rustoleum paint . I let the wire dry and rewound the coil spraying paint on the coil every other round or so .
That worked . I now have headlight . ;)

My crank wasn't as bad as yours . I tried different things , but , nothing worked until I welded the keyway .
I hand filed it to proper shape , but , a dremel rotary tool would have been a lot easier .
Anyway , no more sheared keys and no more key wobble .

I would think the same could be done to the flywheel .

Because Mike is trying to launch himself over the handlebars! Lol

Ha . I think maybe he's just trying to even out the tire wear . ;)
I recall launching over the bars when I was about 6 years old . Not something I ever wanted to do again .
