I am not going to it BUT I do have my credit card on file and have begun throwing some bids their way!! It should be pretty interesting.
-
Too bad it is so far away. Some of those wheel lots would be nice to win. BUT without seeing them they may all be garbage.
If anyone else from Michigan is bidding... maybe we could use the same pallet to truck our items back here.
-
Will anyone here actually be attending the Wollard Auction? 3500 miles is a bit of a stretch for me.
-
I'm not going, but will be bidding!
-
So how goes the auction?¿? ???
-
So far, the prices are NOT cheap!
-
The 1939 Servi-glide just sold for $3000!! I think that was a steal!!!
-
I'm glad I didn't go cause with my little money all I would leave with is a box of rusty bolts. Hope who ever gets the mold for the fender tips starts making some.
-
6 hours of Blood, Sweat and Tears! But I did alright. Can't believe what some items went for. So many rollers went for great prices. I thought the yellow truck and the glide went for way too cheap. It was FUN!
-
I was online the whole time also! Do you think that truck is real, or a homebuilt? The price would lead one to believe it is not an original. Like I said above, I thought the glide was going to sell for big money, as there can't be many around. I know Bob Legron told me he knew someone else who had one, but that is about it.
I bought some reproduction manuals and a batch of Gary's book that I will be making available through the website in the near future.
I also picked up some wico flywheels and backing plates and some other parts.
Anyone else participate?
-
I was outbid on all my stuff. I had other stuff to do today. I cant believe how low some of the prices were on some stuff. All of those wheels sold for $3 each! :o
-
I bid on the other set of wheels, but didn't get them. All those big, heavy, hard to ship items were bought by people there. I didn't want to bid a lot on wheels that I had no idea of the condition.
-
Thats true. I wonder if any of this stuff will make it on ebay. Those engines went cheap also.
-

I would think some of it may. I wanted to buy some cylinders, but I couldn't tell the condition, and did not want to buy junk. I know Wayne was there, so I would not be surprised if he bought a lot of the stuff. If so, he will make stuff available for a reasonable price.
Gary sure had a lot of mud flaps made! I bet there was around 500 pairs sold. I didn't want to buy 100 pairs, just to get a couple of sets.
-
wow, some great deals! i hope wayne picked up a bunch of parts
-
I bought as much of the original literature as I could. Plus some parts. I noticed two heavy internet spenders throughout the ordeal. It looked as though they were buying to stock up. Kind of peculiar how there are mud flaps on ebay already! Right now I am not entirely sure exactly what it is I did win as some of the items I had proxies on flashed through and I didn't get to see any bidding. I think I recognized some of the manuals in the auction that are published in Gary's book.(same spots, etc. on them) I thought that was kind of neat. Just sitting back now and waiting for the invoice!!
-
Rickety you should of got then even if you only needed a couple. I know you could of sold enough to pay for your investment. Most of those guys are wanting 34.00 dollars a pair. I would like some more but they can keep them at that price. I wish I could of gone I would of tried to get as many parts and complete engines as I could just to keep them at a fair price. I hope everybody that wants the items that are going to flood the market waits till the price drops and there's probably a ton of items that will be trashed once there's no way to sell them. :'(
-
If anyone got a lot of those wico flywheels and auto transmissions I would buy 1 if you have it for sale. I lost on auto trans.,they went for about 400. I found sometimes they would give you time to bid and other times it would end while you were clicking bid(I lost a few things that way)
-
I noticed the same thing. I believe sometimes the auctioneer gets going too fast and forgets about the online bidders.
As for the flywheels, I bought some, and some backing plates. After I receive them and check them out, I may have 1 or 2 for sale, depending on condition. I don't want to sell junk to someone, and I am not sure of the condition of any of the stuff.
I also bought what looks like a recovered seat for $115. The last one I had done was well over $200.
-

Reese, I have a feeling those will be available shortly for $10-15 a pair. I think a lot of guys are going to put them on Ebay, and find themselves in competition with each other. Gary must have had a pair made for every restored servi-cycle out there!!
-
I won some wico magneto housings with parts and a lot of 15 drive belts
-
Good morning, Who bought the Servi-Glide and the Yellow G or H model with the trailer? I am positive that Gary would say those two items (at that price) are the deals (or steals) of the decade!!! I have film footage of John Treen riding the yellow bike circa 1990 in New Orleans. Mike
-
I think the Wollards would have done much better selling on their own. That servi-glide could have brought much more, if it had been marketed properly. I feel the same about the bike with trailer.
Mike M, do you know who built that 3 wheel truck? Was it a factory prototype or homebuilt?
-
Rick, According to Norm Burton, Gary built the green three wheeler as an experiment. Gary was forever testing an idea to see if it had merit. That same kind of thinking at the factory supported the progression from direct drive to automatic clutch!! Mike
-
As the auction was going on I felt maybe they should have split it into two days and maybe a few weeks apart to keep the enthusiasm alive. Might have doubled the prices. I also know at times such as their family must be going through you just need to get it done. It will be exciting to see what is on my invoice!
-
ive seen about 5 different auctions for mud flaps on ebay, sellers are in florida

Just one of 6 current auctions , Ebay .
-
Yea there another that started the price at 9.99 and 4.00 shipping. That I would go for your and not much over.
-
Hello, I was there. The wheels that went for $3 were rusted out hulks. Purchased 2 Rollers One for $675 (53 Sportsman) and the other a 55 for $350. Also picked up ORIGINAL Manuals, Parts and Plaques from the 1st Simplex Festival. Alot of fun but we were all tired by the end of the sale. Most of us had been there since 9am. Luckily I am local to the area.
Going to list the Roller once on Ebay, if it doesn't sell Strip and sell off the parts. Keeping the Sportsman. I had to laugh at the guys buying mudflaps and duplicate manuals knowing they would be cutting each others throats on Ebay instead of hold then sell. They proved me right.
-
Welcome aboard!! How were the other wheels, the ones that sold for about $10 each? I bid on those, but like a lot of the stuff, I couldn't tell the condition. Did Wayne Mahaffey buy a lot of the stuff? I hope so, as he will make the parts available to all who need them through his business.
Did you buy any of those repro manuals or mudflaps?
-
Hello, Thanks for the welcome. There where at least 4 out of the area buyers and I was not part of the "Club". One guy purchased a TON of parts, I believe that to be Wayne. Another guy from the either NC or SC purchased many rollers and I think the Yellow Restored One as well as the Scooter and Truck. The $10 wheels went local and they where VERY NICE. The bidder on the wheels will be selling them soon. He bought a semi-roller that needed a rear tire. I was just running out of cash, I only brought 2k for the sale and purchased alot of tools as well as Simplex items.
-
I did not buy any of the repops knowing that the market would be flooded with them in a short time. Only went for originals. The manuals I purchased were for the Simplex M Automatics and got them dirt cheap $35 for 3.
-
Wayne is the smaller, bald gentleman. You will not meet a nicer guy. The short, heavier guy from out of town was probably Jim Lokia, another great fellow.
Here's a picture of Wayne on my bike.
-
Yep, He bought enough to fill a few trailers. Funny thing is I was just up in his area last weekend visiting my parents and my Dads Company is in Decatur. Dies he have a website? I have a feeling I am going to be purchasing many parts I passed over at the auction to put the Sportsman back together.
-
No computer for Wayne. Strictly call and order. He also does not take credit cards, cash or checks only.
-
I'm probably will have to stay off ebay for awhile just saw a rolling frame starting 660.00 w/ a buy it now of 1100.00 and he calls it a sportsman. :'(
-
Whats wrong with it? Did I describe it incorrectly? It's one I purchased at the sale and figured I had better list it now before everyone else.... Looks like I may get to keep my other roller ;D
-
The sportsman did not have crash bars they only had foot pegs to rest your feet on. If it sports a serial # Rick could be more exact with year and make. I'm sorry I said what I said but I've live with a Simplex in my life from my young age. I just now getting to where I can have one for myself and the sale of Gary's things just hit a little close to home :-X.
-
This bike is a '58 or early '59 model. I believe there were a few Sportsmans built with crashbar frames. Without any further physical evidence, it would be hard to prove how this bike was equiped from the factory.
There were some unsold '57's which were sold as '58's and some unsold '58's that were sold as '59's, so these late model bikes are hard to pin down unless there is some provenance to go with it.

-
Hello, I understand. This is my First motorcycle and always wanted a classic. No not the one I currently have on Ebay but the other Sportsman I bought at the sale. I never really knew of these bikes until last week and frankly Love the look and simplicity. I must argue the point of the Roll bars though, I did purchase a small lot of books (5) by Gary and in it he states the early sportsman had them and they disappeared after 57. Needed at least one general book and a service manual to have a clue of what to do.
-
Mike, Thanks for the update there. I will correct the listing as I purchased this one as year unknown. Mark
-
8mm, one thing to keep in mind about the books & info from Wollard is that even though it's the result of a lot of work on his part, it's not 100% accurate. We are all in debt to his efforts to document all things Simplex, but there are a few places where he had to "guess" at some conclu
sions which have since been called into question.
Let us know some details on your other bike (plus photos). Yes these bikes have a classic look without costing a fortune. The guys on the Victory Motorcycle Club site I frequent went gaga over the pictures of mine that I posted. I even got one of them committed to coming to Portland this summer.

-
Anyone get an invoice yet from the auction company?
-
By some miracle did anyone at the sale happen across a copy of the long lost "Pat Williams" registry list? Wollard's son told me he was sure that his dad had one, but had no clue as to where it was.
The biggest reason I regretted not going was missing the chance to snoop thru what might otherwise be discarded notes & contact lists from when Gary was still very active.
Mike Sal
-
Mike, Wayne called me today. He bought a ton of stuff, which is good for all of us, as he is not a hoarder, and will make stuff available. Maybe he will come across that registry. He also recently spoke with Pat, and he may reenter the simplex realm.
-
Rick, Adam gave my a notebook with notes that Gary had made per individual engine repair/upgrade. It may also have some notes about this registry. I am headed out of town in the early morning, but I'll look in that notebook tonight to see if a registry is noted. Mike
-
I have reviewed the notebook, and there is no registry included. Mike
-
No invoice yet Rick.
-
So the registry search continues......
Maybe we need Nicholas Cage to investigate......maybe theres a clue on a 2 dollar bill......

Now that's funny right there!
-
Hmm , did Louisiana ever have it's own currency , possibly during the reign of Treen ? ;)
-
The answer to that question is Yes they had several. ???
-
So, maybe there is a 'hidden' clue ... :)
-
Soooooo, who else got screwed on their invoice? They left out 2 lots that I had won and one was a motor and when I called he said the auctioneer had made a mistake and awarded lots to internet when actually the onsite bidder won and there is nothing they could do about it >:(
-
Mine got invoiced correctly. I won 10 lots. Just trying to get them to call me back so I can get the stuff shipped.
-
A VERY SPECIAL THANKS TO ALL WHO ATTENDED OR PARTICIPATED IN THE WOLLARD ESTATE AUCTION. IT WAS WELL ATTENDED AND ESTIMATED THAT THERE WERE OVER 1,000 PARTICIPANTS BOTH ONSITE OR ONLINE.
THE BEAUTY OF THE AUCTION BUSINESS IS THAT ALL SPECULATION ABOUT THE VALUE OF AN ITEM GOES AWAY WHEN WE SELL SOMETHING. THE MARKET TELLS US EXACTLY WHAT IT IS WORTH BASED UPON A WILLING BUYER AND SELLER.
THE AUCTION AT TIMES HAD A "REUNION" FEEL AS WE HEARD OF MANY STORIES SWAPPED AND SOME SIMPLEX SCHOOLING TOO.
THANKS TO THOSE WHO PURCHASED ITEMS AND FOR YOUR PATIENCE WHILE WAITING ON AN INVOICE. AS YOU CAN IMAGINE, THERE HAS BEEN MUCH TO RECONCILE. IN ADDITION TO THE 300 SIMPLEX LOTS, THERE WERE ANOTHER 500+ LOTS OF CARS, TOOLS AND MEMORABILIA SOLD.
AUCTION RESULTS WILL BE PUBLISHED TO OUR WEBSITE SOON AND WE WILL ALSO POST THE LINK HERE.
WE ARE PROUD TO REPORT THAT A MUSEUM CURATOR HAS SECURED A FEW BIKES FOR THEIR COLLECTION AND THIS MATERIAL WILL BE ON DISPLAY FOR THOUSANDS TO VIEW AND APPRECIATE FOR YEARS TO COME.

I did get the original first printing of his book(thought that was pretty darn cool)
-
I won 9 lots and hope to find the owner(s) of the two lots I missed. Calling tomorrow to get my stuff.
-
Well, my order got screwed up also. They gave my flywheels to someone else! I told them I didn't want the backing plates, since I didn't get the flywheels, and they said no problem and took them off the invoice. My other stuff should be here sometime next week.
-
yeah I was telling the guy on the phone that it would have been nice to know that I didnt win those lots because being on a budget it would have allowed me to bid on other items I wanted but I thought I reached my limit
-
but then I gave up talking and just paid realizing he really didnt care >:(
-
To clear the air for all the complainers...
We do care and do work hard to please everyone but you know how that saying ends...
There were of few lots, 6 at most, where the auctioneer awarded the bid to the floor and the online clerk awarded the bid to the internet in error. It is a mistake. No one is trying to "screw anybody" out of their lots. It was a clerical error, that is it and that is all.
Keep it real guys.
-
I was at the auction this past saturday . Thanks to the Wollard family and Freedom Auctions for the oppurtunity . I understand your in the business to make a buck and do the best for the executors of the estates . There was a large amount of lots and many bidders on site , as well as the online bidders . My thoughts dont much matter and its a moot point at this time , but . I feel there was more then a plenty from each estate that they could have been done on seperate occasions .
-
FOR THOSE INTERESTED, HERE IS A LINK TO AUCTION RESULTS. SIMPLEX MATERIAL BEGINS AT LOT 1001.

Just received my package from the auction. All looks to be in order. I did notice a few of the lots I had proxies on were awarded to the onsite bidder. I was glad to have a chance at the stuff in the first place as I wasn't planning on a trip to Florida! I got a package of photos. Some of which Gary used in his book. Also have some great brochures and manuals. I will be checking it all over more thoroughly later but noticed some drawings of the forks that may clear up some questions that have popped up lately about the nuts at the top. Lots of exploded views including that of the stoplight switch. So stay tuned.....I'll be posting!
-
Nice! I'm waiting on mine, but with the blizzard we had, mail has been delayed!
-
and here I thought the only thing that stops the mail ,is a national holiday . ;D or is it just Saturdays ?
-
Was it sent thru post office or UPS?
-
Red, it was post office, priority mail.
-
Well that will put me back till wed. or thursday with Mardi Gras this week :(
-
Got my stuff today. The restored seat I got was in great shape! I also got a bunch of the smaller size drive belts. I also have a stack of Gary's books, and some reproduction manuals and book of instructions. The manuals and books will be for sale over in the classifieds.
-
I won some wico magneto housings with parts and a lot of 15 drive belts
Red, what size drive belts did you get? I got the short ones, 10 5L280 and 5 5L270.
-
I'm sure I got the long ones but havent got my stuff yet,I'll let you know as soon as it comes. Maybe could trade a couple
-

Sounds good to me. Thanks.
-
Rick, With the paper trail being so recent, I would think that your flywheels could be located and shipped to you. What am I missing here? Mike
-
Mike, they sold them to someone on site. They said it was a case of a glitch between auctioneer and the person running the internet site. I believe Wayne got them and I will get one from him.
-
My belts were the short ones 5l280
-
My belts were the short ones 5l280
Too bad, I was hoping we could swap some.
-
me too,I definitely didnt need 15! I got an H motor with no rod or piston and a couple broke fins on cylinder,if anyone has a good iron cylinder with no broke fins for sale let me know
-
Check out all the stuff for sale on Ebay from the Wollard auction. These guys don't even know what they are selling! I messaged them about a few things 2 days ago, but I have given up. I just hope the buyers know what they are getting. These people that bought this stuff to resell are pretty deceitful IMO. They advertise like they know the history, with phrases like "I was told". Told by who? The guy who owned it passed away 2 years ago! Off my soapbox. LOL
-
Caveat emptor ... ;)
-
I collect Aladdin Lamps (the kerosene kind, not the Genie kind) & twice now I've been to consignment auctions & watched lamps sell which later that night showed up on ebay. Both times they were advertized as having come out of "estate" sales & in "great" condition......when obviously the sellers had no idea where the lamps came from or what kind of condition they were really in.
Mike Sal
-
The other phrase they use is ( Barn Find ) but I guess its better than workshop or storage. I think y'all be talking about the one that listed a front break as a rear break assy. :-X
-
There have been a bunch. I helped one guy out, and he did not even respond with a simple thank you.
-
Maybe we should send a message to the members to be on the lookout for misleading ebay items. You think cause I see a lot on newbies listed and maybe paying more items than they should be. I know its better buyer beware but there should be something for ones that are trying to get something together on a budget. ::)
-
I've been watching the parts on ebay that say they are for a 53 automatic.... should I stay away from these things? I'm needing alot of these things, but can't afford to buy everything at once, I would really like to get the kicker and pinion gear if it would be the right one for my 55. I also need the coils, points ect. assembly. Shoul I steer clear???
-
That pinion gear is nothing but a paperweight! The teeth are almost gone on one side, and the mounting holes have been drill out for some unknown reason. Wayne sells brand new reproductions of those for $52.
The kick starter might not be bad for the right price. It will probably need to be bushed, and it might need a new sector gear.
What type of flywheel do you have? The one on Ebay is for a Wico. I'm not sure of the going rate for those.
Rick
-
Thanks for the info. My flywheel looks like the one that is listed. The back of the plate has wico stamped on it like the one that is listed. I only have so much money to spend at this time, and I want to make sure I spend it wisely. I also need a rear brake assembly and axle, decisions, decisions.
-
Aother thing.... my front wheel is 2" wide but my rear wheel is only 1" wide. I read in another post that later model wheels are 2". Do I have the wrong rear wheel?? If so, will the brake assembly listed on ebay work on my wheel? There are 2 listed on ebay right now, I've been interested in the one that is listed by "machivmotors" will this fit??
-
Your bike should have 2" wheels front and rear. The brake you mention is correct. The other one is a front brake, the guy, bldfla941, just doesn't know any better. He is a local that lives near the Wollard auction, and thought he could make a killing on servi-cycle parts.
As for the magneto parts, if you only need the points, condenser and coils, and not the backing plate, Wayne has those new. If you buy that used one, there is a very good chance that none of those parts are any good.
-
Hi Sonriser this is 57 Ford .may have some parts you're looking for, came with my bike . I'm not very good on this thing too old I guess if you would to talk .let me know ? and I will send you my phone # by e mail. thanks Hank
-
Would love to see what you have, I sent you a personal message, look forward to hearing from you.
-
Sonrisers, do you need just the brake backing plate or do you need the hub assembly also?
-
I need the whole assembly, plate brakes axle and bearings, the stuff on ebay went way out of control. I was looking at the coils and back plate also....over $300. wow!
-
Sonriser this is 57 Ford have the whole assembly . When I was putting it to together talked to Wayne about the drum being a little pitted. He said had turned them before, but thought it was alright. I think I sent you my phone # yesterday. call me if you have any interest better price than e bay 57 Ford
-
57 ford... I never got your message... try sending it again. Thanks, Sonrisers
-
HELP.... The rear wheel I have must be off an older model, prob the 47 I owned with my brother. will the narrow wheel work on my bike with the automatic transmission? Or do I need to get the 2" wheel. I have everything for the narrow wheel but the brake assembly and axle, so I will use it if it will work. Thanks
-
The wheels are interchangeable mechanically, but might look a little odd.
-
Thanks Ricks, it'll have to work for now.
-
Sonrisers before making any quick calls check the hubs. Measure the width of each hub outside to outside and if the wide one is on the 1" wide rim just swap hubs and put the 2"wide rim in the rear. Problem solved. 8)

This is what I will be doing if I can not find a 2" rim at a decent price.
-
I have removed the spokes from both wheels so I can clean them up and get them powder coated. Will the hubs fit either wheel? I have all the spokes kept seperate for each wheel [with the exception of the one that I broke], but I will swap them when I go to put them back together....that is...IF I can get them back together. I'll send out a warning post a couple days before I start so you guys can make sure you stayed glued to your computers.LOL

How many spokes do you need? I have plenty of old crusty spokes.
-
Sunrise urgent warning B-4 you start..... Take several good photos of the rims b-4 you take them apart find a starting spot and note the pattern. That way you have it to go by it helps unless you have extra rims floating around. I also seen a 2'' wide rim on ebay last night starting at 10.00 dollars. :)
-
I am only needing 1 spoke. I broke the very first one I started with. It was one on the brake side of the rear wheel, 1 of the shorter ones. I may also need a few of the spoke nuts, of what ever you call them. I have a few of them that the heads are stripped out. I took about 50 photos of both wheels b4 I disassembled them, but I'm still not that confident about putting them back together. The last time I tried to respoke a wheel, I was just a teenager, and never did get it right. I saw the 2" wheel on ebay also, but I played that game last week with the parts that were listed and don't know if I want to try that again or not. I'm gonna stay away, til the end and see what it does.
