Good evening,
Will someone please measure the wire diameter to make retaining ring for round taillight?  I made one and used too small of diameter and lens can still shake out so I thought I would ask before I make another one.
Thank you,

Engine & Transmission / model M right side bearing inner race direction
« on: October 27, 2023, 05:03:14 PM »
Good evening,
I noticed a lot of end play on my crank shaft when fitting up parts and I think the right side bearing inner race was installed on the wrong side.  The inner race was facing the inside of the engine and I was able to drive the bearing out, but I am thinking the inner race should be facing the flywheel.
I cant tell from parts books, does anyone know.  Refer to attached image of bearing.

Please let me know.
Thank you,

Good evening,
Has anyone repaired the Phelon flywheel hub keyway? Or crankshaft?

I earned the fool of the year award because I only tightened my Phelon flywheel about half way to measure headlight coil amperage and about a minute later found that is not enough to keep from ruining the keyway on the flywheel and crank. I did not tighten it all the way because I knew I was going to be taking it back off.

I am disappointed it did not shear the key, but instead rolled it.  The key looks good. Maybe an aluminum key would have sheared. The crank and flywheel are very soft compared to other things I have worked on.

I have not ever repaired keyways, I have always been able to easily make and replace the metal part that is damaged or buy a new one.  Not sure if mig welding or brazing the crank would be best and then cut a new keyway.  I know the shaft could be replaced, but would probably attempt to fill it in and cut a new keyway.

The flywheel really concerns be because trying to replace the hub and get it trued back up looks like a problem, but cant be used like it is.
Please let me know.

Frame, Tank, Seat, Controls, Etc / Model M throttle twist assembly
« on: May 26, 2023, 05:19:19 PM »
Good evening,
I have a model M I fixed up years ago and have never started because I am missing some throttle twist parts.  I have a few pictures from this site, but none showing how the twist tube is held on or what the retainer that does that looks like or the inside of the twist tube.
This is an odd design.
I am wanting to make parts 770, 762 and 763.  I have all the other parts.  Refer to attached parts image.
I would appreciate pictures and some measurements.

Restoration Projects / K model restoration
« on: June 13, 2022, 05:22:48 PM »
Good evening,
Attached are images of the K model I (and also you for helping) have been working on.  This is where I wound up with what I have and figure it is time to move it to the restoration section.
I planning to paint it this year if time permits. I typically fix bikes up nice enough to where I am reluctant to ride them anymore, but I plan to ride this.

I prefer it be more correct, but for now, this is what I have.  The tail light, seat pan, kicker, flywheel cover and rocker pedal are wrong.
I could easily make a correct rocker, but left this one that is Late L ratchet with the K and early L detent cup welded to it as part of the history of this bike because I believe a owner did it years ago to solve a problem.

The flywheel cover came with the pile and appears to went to a model that did not have a hole so no kicker.  Since someone already put a hole in it, I used it and made a pinion cover for it.

The seat pan is 40's Harley and a little big.  I may cut it down, but if I leave it original size and stitch a cover for it, at least I can still put it on a Harley if I get a Simplex seat.

Good evening,
Once again I have found something that does not fit on project K model.  The forks that came with the project are short about 1/4" at the steering head.  Refer to attached images.  They measure 5 1/8" and need to be 5 3/8".  I measured my M model and they are 5 3/8", but not the correct type for the K model.
This is the first time I have assembled it with the bearings and steering race nut.  Wish I would have checked that years ago.
As far as I can tell from L model pictures and the 1950 and earlier parts pages, the forks appear to be the correct design.
I do not have photos of a K model to study, but do have nice L model and it looks right.

The forks do not appear to be modified and I have confirmed using the information from this site that the frame is a K model frame because of the double step welded on seat leaf spring.

I do know the springs that came with the pile are not correct.  I should have two different sizes per side.  Maybe they are the wrong forks.

Any ideas?
Please let me know.

Engine & Transmission / motor pulley belt shield
« on: May 12, 2022, 05:26:25 AM »
Good morning,
I am wondering if anyone has a picture of motor pulley belt shield 1893? The parts book says it is used on all clutch models and I need to make one.
Currently I just have a spacer tube there for the stator plate.  What I do have for the belt is a guide that mounts to the carburetor and I think that is for the automatics which my auto does not have, so I can put it there.
Please let me know.

Good morning,
I need to make handlebar twist control parts for my K model and from part pictures, I am not certain which to use a dimensions.
Attached is an image from parts book and I believe the K model and L model are different.  I have some questions about the pins and twist parts.
the parts list looks like K should have twist grip body 708 for 5/16 pin.  I dont see how the left grip body can be stationary since that works the decompressor.
I am also wondering what the 707 cable pin looks like?  Maybe just slotted?

Please let me know.

Engine & Transmission / boring cylinder
« on: April 29, 2022, 06:07:12 PM »
Good evening,
My K model has .017" wear in the middle of the cylinder and I am wondering if anyone knows who can bore that and have the oversized piston to fit it?  Maybe Wayne?  Has anyone had one bored out?  Any idea of cost?

I normally do my own resizing, but my machine will not do this since it does not have a through hole cylinder.

Please let me know.

Engine & Transmission / Wico magneto wont spark at kick starter speed
« on: April 23, 2022, 03:49:45 PM »
Good evening,
I have a Wico magneto that will not produce spark when the kick starter is used or the flywheel is spun by hand with the spark plugs out.  I have tested with plugs, with one wire grounded.  The wires are copper core and I have also tested it with short wires.
It has a nice spark when turned with a drill and will start and run.

It has a new (aftermarket) coil I tested at 1.3 ohm primary and about 9,000 ohm secondary.  It has new points gapped at .018 and I tried other settings.  It has a new (aftermarket) condenser I tested at .2 micro farad and I tried others with no difference.

The flywheel seems to have enough magnetism, but I do not have another running Simplex that has Wico to compare.  The air gap between the laminates and flywheel is about .010, so that should be close enough.

Has anyone else experienced this? Or have any ideas?
Please let me know.

Engine & Transmission / MS93F carburetor jet size
« on: April 23, 2022, 03:40:39 PM »
Good evening,
does anyone know what size of hole is in the main jet of MS93F carburetor?  Mine looks big for the engine. It is a #48 (.076") drill size.
Please let me know.

Engine & Transmission / rotary valve and engine case repair
« on: April 22, 2022, 08:49:47 AM »
Good morning,
I have gotten back to my K model project and have attempted to start the engine.  It will try to idle but is spitting a lot of fuel out of the carburetor.  It will not speed up. When I had the engine apart, I knew the rotary valve and engine case has a lot of damage and I think that is keeping it from running.
I am wondering what others have tried to repair these items?  I am looking for ideas before I try either making an oversized rotary valve and machining the case to fit, or sleeving the case to fit a smaller rotary valve.  Possibly smearing JB weld on the surfaces to fill in voids and refinishing to original size.

Please let me know of things that have been tried.
Thank you,
Scooter

Engine & Transmission / Is this the wrong kicker for K model?
« on: November 20, 2021, 03:53:06 PM »
Good evening,
I am wondering if this is the wrong kicker for the K model?  The centerline of the pitch radius is too big for the crankshaft centerline.
Maybe this is for the bolt on type.  The only picture I can find of the kicker side of the K is the fuzzy publication Servi-Gram and the bend in the arm is different.
Please let me know.

Good evening,
Will someone please give me the correct spring dimensions for the later shifter bikes (K model) that go on each side of the pulley assembly and connect in the frame tubes behind the engine?  The ones I tried just fall a little short of having enough tension.

Mine are: .535 OD X .079" wire and have 10" free length hook end to hook end and the coil part is 7 1/2".  Refer to attached image.
Thank you,
Scooter
