Wheels & Tires / Re: Hub for 1937
« on: March 08, 2022, 06:31:09 PM »
Yes it is a Villiers 9D that I have. I haven't done much with the motor yet, but do need a lot of parts. Is there any way that you could send some pics of what you have? If you are finished with Villiers, maybe you would want to sell the lot. My email is covcolt65@ yahoo.com. Looking forward to hearing from you. Thanks, Garry.

Glad they didn't use a skip tooth chain. The rear sprocket is from a bunch of nos parts I got for my 1949 CZ 125T. Trying to use all the spare parts I have for the Frankenstein. LOL Rick did a great job for me. I was getting close to giving up on this idea. I'm trying to put a 1938 Villiers 125 in it. The motor is unique in that you can rotate the cylinder 180 degrees and have the carb in front and exhaust pipes coming out of the back if that fits better in the frame. The motor needs a lot of work too, but it does occupy time and right now that is important. A big thanks again to Rick.

Buy, Sell, Trade / Re: Early Simplex rear hub

Thanks Rick for quick reply. I tried to send some pics yesterday, but they were too big.  I'll have to figure out how to reduce them. You are right about finding one like it. I've talked to Wayne a number of times about this rear hub and he has never seen one like it. Both front and back hubs were made in England. Someone in the past replace the balls with caged bearings which were not the right size. The caged bearings were placed in the original cups and wore thru. One side was replaced with a larger caged bearing causing a wheel wobble which resulted in destroying bearing, cup and part of the hub. The wobble caused the brake shoes to wear thru the tin backing plate. I was going to replace the backing plate, but now see where the hub has separated from the drum. This will have to be welded and trued. Since this isn't a restoration, I thought maybe best to try to replace the whole rear hub with a later Simplex. Just wondering how expensive that would be.

What is the going price for a complete Simplex rear hub and brakes? Earlier the better. I'm having a lot of trouble with the '37. It has been really badly abused. Thanks for any input.

Thanks Tom, I got the Crown plates today. This is very generous of you. Will you send me an amount that I can pay you? This is one of the best sites that I've been on. Very friendly and informative. I've always liked the uniqueness  of the Simplex,  but never had the opportunity to play with one. This should be fun. Garry

Thanks Rick for all of your help. You did a fantastic job on the stretch bike. I only wish I had half of your ability. Keep up the good work. By the way, your project did give me more ideas. Thanks, Garry.

Rick, thanks. That really helps. I'm not a great fabricator, but will give it a shot. I'll let you know how it evolves. Garry

Thanks Rick. Since the frame of the '37 is so messed up I'm thinking of trying to put the '38  Villiers motor in it. It is a left side chain drive and am thinking of using a short chain to a sprocket on the left side and a jack shaft to a pulley to the right side.   It seems like the Simplex sheave could be moved to the right side. This way I could keep using all of the original Simplex parts. I need the smallest pulley possible as there is not much room but don't know what the original '37 sheave would take. Hope this makes sense and don't know if it will work, but thought it was worth a look into. Rick, thanks for the response.
