Other Things Simplex / Again, not a Simplex but still awesome!
« on: April 28, 2012, 01:35:23 PM »
 ;D
This the latest find. When it rains it pours, I am way over the "rust budget" and taking a lot of heat from the wife but I could not pass this up. It is a 1947 Powell P-48. It is all original, I bought it from the estate of the original owner. His adult son gave me all kinds of history on it. It hasn't been registered since 1970, still has the original black and yellow plate. I was told it is on the original tires, might be, they are a matched set of goodyears. (rotten of course)
Looks like everything is there, very little has been messed with. The gas tank on these is cool, it is the seat and is all aluminum.

These Powells are pretty rare, have only seen 1 other. Can't find any for sale so I'm not even sure as to a value. I think I'll sell the Harley Super 10 and keep this. (maybe sell one of the Simplex's?)

Other Things Simplex / Re: Well... not exactly a Simplex

Hummmm.... I do believe I am wrong. This is not a '54 at all, it is a 1960 Super 10! Well that might raise some issues with the title I have!
I will need to re-register with the current info and make it a 1960!
Still cool, maybe cooler. I could not find a stock paint job like this when searching hummers. I searched Super 10's and sure enough this is the exact match to the factory paint.
So I am thinking this is, in fact, all original!

Thanks Mike, and yeah the property taxes are nuts. I think it was about $6200 last year!

Other Things Simplex / Well... not exactly a Simplex

I picked this up today; 1954 Harley Davidson Hummer. (165cc) I have seen a few of these here and there over the years and thought they were cool. (the gas tank could be better, would have made the whole bike better)
Anyway, I came across this one and had to get it. Looks pretty original, runs pretty well. I didn't dare get it up to speed until I go through it and tighten and check it.
Not a Simplex but thought I'd share...

Don't know what it's worth but it's so cool! If one was for sale for $4500 with a great restoration that puts these around, maybe less than the servicycles?
Super cool, would love to have one.

Other Things Simplex / Re: T-shirt Project
« on: March 06, 2012, 01:44:11 PM »
I don't know where we are with this, if anything moved forward or not but I have been talking with my wife and I am about 99% sure I am going to start making t-shirts soon. I have wanted to do it for years and specialize in stuff just like this; smaller runs of old auto/gas & oil/motorcycle logos.
I'd like tot be able to offer more colors, can't be too much more difficult to print using multiple shirt colors as long as the ink colors will be the same. (Simplex logo would look good on black, green, white, etc shirts with the same color inks) They won't be as cheap as all one color because the minimums when buying the shirts wholesale but it isn't that much from what I have seen. Plus, I plan to do many different companies so I should be able to get decent deals and buy in bulk.
I'll get started as time allows and I am looking for used equipment now. I'm planning to do a lot of the old gas and oil companies. (odd stuff, long since out of business as well as the logod from the pump makers themselves) I'm sure once I'm up and running I'll be looking for cool old logos.
Anyway, just wanted to throw that out there. If nothing else comes of this thread I'll be doing Simplex shirts as one of my first batches. (maybe do a run of logos and a run of ones with the bike on it?) The screens aren't that big of a deal to make so once I am up and running it wouldn't be a big deal to have 2 designs .

Really beautiful Rick!  :o
I love that engine compartment... nothing beats black tins and 48's! That is a great color.
I want to do a street bug much like that, stock color and chrome with stock wheels, slight rake to bring the front end down but with a killer motor.
I never got much into turbos, helped a buddy put one on his 68 ghia in high school. They are a pain. I just love 48's!

Rick, that thing is coming out great! Im just catching up on all the threads and was checking this one out- WOW! I dig it, this is a great project I'd love to try sometime.
BTW- Did I read you were involved in racing VW's? I used to do a bit of that myself. I don'tknow how long you have been doing it but I used to work at SCS, Small Car Specialties in Anaheim, CA, 20 years ago! I also worked a bit at FAT performance. I knew a few of the guys at Gene Berg and had a Berg/FAT 2276 in my last bug. (57 ragtop)
I plan to do another bug soon. All stock oval window with a monster 2 litre with dual 48's... I LOVE the way 48's sound! My oval sounded great, straight cuts, monster heads with Berg triple Chevy springs, 12:1 compression, FK89 cam, was an awesome motor. I want to do something like it but this time in a stock looking oval.

what is the cylinder near the back hub..., a grenade launcher???
That is an odd little canister. It looks like it should be there. I was wondering if they were an accessory at some point? (maybe for other bikes?) There is a small drain hole in the bottom corner, the clamp fits perfect, it seems like it was designed to be there! I'll try to post a better pic later.

if you bought this from Knute then it was the same bike I had been talking to him about
Yes, that is the one. I was shocked it was still available. Today was the first day I could get over there to see it. (2 hour trip) I thought for sure it would be sold before I could get there. I saw it online within an hour of him posting it but couldn't get away.

What is better than one Simplex? TWO!  ;D
I just got back from a short road trip with my second Simplex. (been a good few weeks for me!)
I picked this one up off a craigslist ad, was shocked I was able to get it. The ad was up for a few days before I was able to make my way over to the coast and pick it up.
I paid $1300 for it. (I include the price so people can get an idea of current values) It does not run, but turns over well. I think it could run. The tank is great, frame has some tweaks, rear fender has some rust, not too bad.  All in all it is pretty solid. I was told it ran a few years ago.
So now it is time for you guys to educate me. See anything interesting? Out of the ordinary? It was sold to me as a 1948, but he really had no idea. (he was told it was a 48 when he bought it)
Engine #M21329B, Frame #13002. (what year is it?)
What do you guys think?

Cool Rick.
Ever thought of a members only thread where we can post info about deals and available bikes we hear about, etc but the general public doesn't see? For example, if anyone finds something in CA, I'd be interested in hearing about it. Problem is, there might be dozens of people lurking who would want that info too.
Just a thought...
