Puncture
« on: January 30, 2014, 12:46:29 PM »
Hi Guys,
Had a puncture on the Simplex today but with probable 60+ year old tires what should I expect. Right?
Tire still looks fair so I went to the local Mall-wart and checked in the bike department for a tube.
Bell makes one the right size and of course Mall-warts sells it.
Don't know if it is less money through Coker but they are here and available now.
Cost was like $8 so won't loose any sleep either way.
Here's a couple pics of the repair.
Cheers

I like to use the motorcycle tubes with the screw in valve stem.  I can usually find them for around $10 on eBay, and they are much heavier duty than the bike tubes. I use the 2.75/3.00 - 21 size.  If I could find 2.50 - 20, I would try that size.

Hi RickS,
While working on the bike I saw no markings on the final belt.
Do you have info or a source for the belt.
Think it might be smart to replace it when I'm working back there again.
Thanks in advance.
Cheers

I don't know the belt size on the shifter bikes.  Maybe KartJockey could help you out, as he has a shift bike.

I might take it off and have it sized before it's too late.
Looks like it is beginning to dry out with age.
KartJockey if you have info; you could sure save me a bunch of work. (;-{)>

Stafford ,

This should help you :

Here are the measurements from my original belts.  Belts have Dayton molded into them and maybe a run or mold number but cannot see a part number.  If there ever was one maybe it was printed on.  Primary belt looks to be settling down in the crank pulley a bit.  Measures .612wide X 26" long around the outside. The width measurement would explain why it sits deeper in the vee pulley This was taken with the rocker clutch tipped back to keep the belt taught so string would wrap around nicely.  Secondary belt measures .761 wide X 76.5" long around the outside.  Some wear but not bad. Kind of thinking about putting it back on to save originality.  Both belts are cog belts.

Nice job back tracking on the site PD.  I think belts may actually be sized by either the center line of the Vee or the inside diameter but for measurement purposes with a string that was the only way I had to do it.  I suppose a guy could do some math with Pi and get the answer. So maybe the "listed" size might be somewhat smaller.

Easy, take the old belt to Napa and the counter man will match it with a new Gates Belt.
If not, place a mark on the outside of the belt and measure all the way around and then have
Napa do the same on a new Gates Belt.
