Title: Events
Post by: bill marcum on March 08, 2012, 05:20:57 PM
Fellow Semplex Owners
Just thought it would be nice to have a event topic. There is one that is coming in May it is a Motor scooter swap meet & bicycle show .  I will attach the flyer. Might be some Simplex Bikes there or parts. Sounds like fun! 8)  Bill Marcum

Sounds like a cool thing to go to, but it's the same weekend as the big Studebaker swap meet in South Bend and the big ww2 reenactment weekend in Lowell, Indiana.  Both of which are annual events for me. The flyer didn't really say which town it was in.

Do you plan to go?  If so, maybe you could keep us informed of any Simplex treasures via cell phone.

The earlier seats, from 1935 to 1939 were made by Messenger or Troxel.  After this, simplex started making their own, and they became bigger.  According to Gay Wollard, the size came from Cyclone Treen's rather large backside!

Well I made it to the Smithville bike show and to my opinion it was a bust. I was for sure out powered even by a mustang scooter until a guy parked a 62 mini mini bike that had less than 10th total miles on it. There was a 47 Indian scout with only 4037 total miles on it. But the topper of event with 30+ or - bikes including a British Taylor making a showing. The winner of the day was a 1/2 scale midget racer with a single cylinder Harley motor that powered it. Here's a couple of photos

oil-lamp,
Sorry that the show was a bust for you. From the pictures it looked like the bikes that were there were pretty cool. What kind of bike was the one with the stock paint and the leaf spring front end next to the Indian? Bill Marcum 8)

The one on the backside of the 47 chief is and don't quote me on this. I think it was a 1926 Indian but was not the 101 it is a daily driver and will never be repainted cause he likes it like that. Here's a photo.

My father told me he did trace the outline by sitting on a piece of paper or cardboard, but his "backside" was rather normally proportioned for a man of 6 foot height, if anything, a bit flat, a trait I have regrettably inherited.

Yep, I have a '53. I made the mistake of trusting someone who wanted some cosmetic surgery, wishing to trade for powder coating the bike and providing the missing air filter. He's had it for a year, keeps telling me he's been too sick to do what he promised. Picking it up early July with likely nothing done. I don't know why I trust people to do the right thing, I've sure been burned often enough.

Ben, where do you live?  If you can make it to the Vintage Motorbike Club meet in Portland, Indiana in July, you will see a bunch of Simplex's.  There is a group that gathers on "The Simplex Hill".

Ben, I have got burned on trading labor literally every time the last time by a long time friend. We agreed I would build a 30x40 garage complete with infloor heat and in return he would do the body and paint on my 59 Apache needless to say he has enjoyed his heated garage the last 6yrs and my truck looks the same . Never again you pay me , I pay you. I am going to try to make Simplex hill in July I will bring my bike although probley incomplete . Running out of time, and still have to do the wheels.

Ben, the official dates are 09 thru 13 July, but I'm told the meat of the event takes place from 07 thru 12 July.

Due to schedule conflicts, I'll be there the afternoon of the 7th thru the 9th or 10th.  It'll be my first time to attend.

Ben, there was at least 25 simplex cycles in Portland this year.  You should have seen Tom, aka KartJockey, and I riding around like 2 teenagers!  There were also about 6 original 3 wheel trucks, and a couple of truck replicas.  Maybe you can make it next year.

Impossible.  They were spread out all over the fairgrounds.  We could have lined up a dozen or so, but really did not think of it.  Maybe next year we could try that.

I went to this.  Tried to meet up with Bill Marcum but he was called into work that day and ended up not being able to make it.  So we only talked on the phone.  The swap meet was quite small but interesting. Tried to buy a seat off of a compact but the guy wouldn't part with it. There was a step-through Simplex there and I met a guy with about a dozen Simplexes. I need to get an email out to him to see what he has to sell. If anything.

Tom, was the step-through Simplex one of the old ones with the spoked rims, or the "modern" scooter with the big wheels?

What year do you think it is Rick?  The handle bar stem looks a lot like my '48.  When did the wheels change on these?
Title: Re: Events
Post by: Ricks on December 22, 2012, 06:19:47 PM
Tom, the Simplex Scooter was built from 1957-1959, I believe.  I have read where some might have been built in 1956, but I don't know much about these scooters.

In 1939, Simplex built a scooter that used the wheels,  front suspension, and engine, but with a step thru frame for delivery service. I have never seen one in person, but have seen a picture or two.  I think Gary Wollard had one in his collection, and he wrote that they came in 2 different wheelbases. If I find a picture, I will add it to this post.

Was that scooter you saw for sale?  Did it have an engine?
Title: Re: Events
Post by: kartjockey on December 22, 2012, 06:39:27 PM
I think he had the engine but it was not on it.  It was not for sale.

Here are some pictures of Gary's Servi-Glide that will be in the auction.  I know they claim it is the only one known to exist, but Bob Legron has told me about another that he knows of.

This is missing the side panels that cover the engine.

All Simplex were push start until 1945.  They did come out with a retro fit kit for some earlier models.
