Manuals Only / Simplex parts catalog

This catalog has outstanding exploded views and original simplex part numbers. Gives some insight of when Simplex changed their designs by following the part numbers and referencing the photos. Also check out the envelope Simplex mailed it in . What a unique postmark. Treen had style! I'll be scanning the complete book in a day or two.

This pic is of a Hit-n-Miss engine it restored. The man is the grandson of the original owner and that is his grandson. Neat!

Restoration Projects / My '48
« on: January 28, 2012, 05:18:06 PM »
Thought I would post some pics of my ride. Rust shot is how it was found in Mississippi. Complete except for the taillight lens. (I recently found the correct one). I left the 1948 Mississippi tag on it for sex appeal. Through the years I have restored several different engines and when I saw this at my buddies house I knew I had to get my hands on it! He would pay for the fun and I would get the enjoyment of doing it. But the story ends bittersweet. Throughout the restoration he wrote his will out and we joked about him leaving me his truck(my back-up) and the Simplex. Unfortunately he would pass only six months later. Good news is he did get to ride it and got to see photos of it completed.

This is awesome and gives great insight to the birthing of our mechanical beauties. Each page of writing is for the photo that immediately follows it. just match up the spiral binder.

I'm a bit of a photo buff and shot this with black and white film to give a nostalgic look. 1949 Chevy Model 3600. Just celebrated 25 years behind the wheel by installing a Chevy made original deluxe heater with defrost. What a wonderful option!

I made this lamp from a 1937 Simplex tank. I spun up a gas cap(have my own lathe) out of some aluminum and then drilled a hole through the center of it to mount the lamp shade post to. I fed the wire out the bottom where the fuel would ordinarily come out. Being a fanatic for originality I did not alter the tank so if need be it could still be used. I used an Edison brand spark plug as a finial to hold the lamp shade in place. I installed a four position touch on/touch off  switch so with just a tap I can have the amount of light I want. Everything is hand made.

Introductions / Hello Everyone
« on: January 21, 2012, 06:57:44 AM »
Hi all,
My name is Tom. Just to introduce myself a bit. I was an automotive machinist for 28 years. Throughout those years I got to see and restore a lot of old and unusual engines at the owners expense. Now that's fun! I love anything that's old and goes. I have a 1949 Chevy 3/4 ton truck that has been my daily driver for 25 years. Also have a 1951(for a back up). I feel best when I am surrounded with old iron and my house shows that. To name a few. My 1948 Simplex. 1966 Sears Sabre motor scooter. Late '60s Margay go kart. 1951 J.C. Higgins Colorflow bicycle. Wife rides a 1949 Schwinn Starlet. Several single cylinder vintage gas engines. And countless collections of oddities and fine pieces of junk! Later I will tell you about my Simplex and the story behind it. Big thanks to RickS for calling me in!
