Engine & Transmission / L model
« on: January 17, 2021, 05:31:00 AM »
Pics showing comparison of early rotary valve to the L model. Early rotary valve has to be installed before installing both bearing races. There are retaining clips that the races seat against.  The L block now has a step that the races seat against and thus a much smaller rotary valve.

Other Things Simplex / Locking ring

I was about to dismiss these from being a Simplex part as they were mixed in with some other peculiar parts. But the holes lined up with the Wico flywheel.  (that's witherbee ignitor co.)  Upon looking in a manual it turned out they are indeed a Simplex part.  Looked to be NOS as there aren't any bolt marks.  I would imagine they weren't often used as one could definitely get by without it.

Other Things Simplex / Seat bar
« on: January 02, 2021, 07:50:45 PM »
I noticed this long crossbar for the seat and wondered if someone had altered this bike.  But while sorting through all of my stuff today I came across one.  About 11" from hole to hole.  Could this support the Harley sized seat we have heard some Simplexes having?

Interesting there are two different assembly part numbers.  Might this be the difference of  a two plug coil to a one plug coil?

Restoration Projects / 1940 Serviglide
« on: September 26, 2020, 07:14:51 PM »
I have been thinking of an approach of how to go about restoring this bike.  i have decided to photograph every part as I received them.  To have a bunch of photos to refer back to as the restoration goes on.  The manual is very helpful as it has already uncovered the myth of what the little ring was for just behind the seat.  Choke knob!

So I will just begin at the beginning.  First picture is of the lean release where the original owner paid the bike in full.  Shows matching engine number.  Next pic is a receipt that shows he bought a rod and other parts.  The story is he 'blew a rod in '48!' I guess the receipt proves that.  Other photo shows his payment receipts as he made payments towards owning the bike.

Lots of pictures of the frame.  Pay close attention to the small clips (or hooks) back near the rear wheel drop-outs Those are what the springs hook on that holds the "hood" in place.  The hood is three sided in that the grill in front of the engine is attached to each side cover.  These hooks are what makes it a 1940.  Kind of strange as it is very clear to what the purchase date was.  ( I have that first payment receipt)

Brochures and other Literature / 1939 Serviglide/Servicycle
« on: September 23, 2020, 04:19:51 PM »
I believe these to be 1939.  The 1940 Manual states that  the 1939 ("prior 1940") uses wingnuts to attach the side covers.  The 1940 uses spring clips.  If you zoom in on Wayne's Serviglide the wingnuts can be seen.

Other Things Simplex / It happened one day...
« on: September 19, 2020, 04:13:32 AM »
So here's a long story to tell.  Several months back I set out on a quest to locate Lamptester55 that had posted on here 8+ years ago. He owned a 1940 Serviglide. (you can view his posts under that username).  I wanted to buy this bike if at all possible.  Throughout months of searching for him because of his contacts changing over the years the deed was done.  He lived in Dearborn!

This task was then followed by more months of correspondence until, finally,  the decision was made to sell and I was on it!

Rodney is a great guy and I had a great day picking up the bike.  We talked about many things.  He worked for the Ford Motor company for 30 years or so and had many interesting things to say.  Plus he wrote a book.  A pleasure to meet!

That day was a lot to absorb!  It is exciting to know I have a Serviglide in the garage and also that Rodney was the perfect caretaker of it and all the info that came with it for over 46 years!  Makes me the third owner. He worked with the original owners son.  (documented)

A lot to sort through and post but I will start a thread soon. Just wanted to let you all in on what has been going on.

Other Things Simplex / Gas City
« on: September 06, 2020, 03:54:41 AM »
So on a whim I decided to go to the Gas City swap meet in Indiana.  Jim Lokai went also but I didn't get there until Saturday morning so we missed each other.

First few pictures are from my travels along the way.  Ohio and Indiana are great states to see old iron in. Always something to see!  The rest of the photos are from at the meet.  Mostly Harley stuff but was cool to see some real early parts and bikes.  Lots of early parts and motors. It was fun and met a few guys and saw one that goes to Portland.  The red bike was a 1949 Husqvarna but the frontend resembled a James.

Afterwards, I decided to head straight east to I-75 taking some backroads and realized I was in Ernies neck of the woods.  He was home and we hung out in his garage for a few hours.  All good stuff!

Other Things Simplex / Wow! Exciting news!
« on: June 09, 2020, 03:11:03 PM »
Always canvasing the internet for Simplex stuff.  And lo and behold I find an issue of "Servicycling " in England.  And after some efforts from a girl(i'll call her Becky) she managed to get it shipped across the pond!   It's in transit now and I will be sure to post when it arrives.

So stay tuned!!
