Other Things Simplex / Early grips
« on: March 11, 2024, 09:24:11 PM »
I have been making some early dummy grips.  Jim Lokai is planning on bringing his direct drives to Portland this year and all of them have been missing the left grip.  The pics show my version of a reproduction.  I tried to match those of an early G model.

Jim sent one of his twist grips to me for dimensions.  I was pretty happy to see it as I had wondered how they worked.  They always seemed to be stiff but actually have a tension ring that make them that way.  Infinite cruise control!

I found some nice shrink tube that was sold as fishing pole grip (and other sport handles).  It had virtually no shrinkage long ways and it only shrank on the diameter.  I sent him enough grip material to do the right side on each bike as well.

So now he will have matching grips.

Brochures and other Literature / Re: lawnmower

I was drifting through old, classified ads on Smokestak and came across some MS carbs.  An MS93A and MS93C so correct for early direct drives. I contacted the seller so that I could buy them. He asked me if I was interested in a Simplex gas tank too.  Well...YEAH! This is what he had. I bought it!

It is a match to the lawnmower brochure above.  If you zoom in on the lower image of the brochure you will see that the decals match.   Who knew!?

Photo Gallery / 1939 Serviglide
« on: March 10, 2024, 11:10:27 AM »
At last, through a heads up from Rick the Serviglide that was once owned by Gary Wollard and then by Wayne Mahaffey has been found.  Some of us may recognize it when it was green as Wayne brought it to Portland several years back.  It was then sold to a new home in Washington State.  After that the bike was disassembled, repainted and chromed.  I contacted this person to get the engine number as the curiosity was killing me.  He had taken several photos of the restoration.  He has done many motorcycle restorations.

The engine number is 39D 323.   The Simplex manual clearly defines the 1939 from the 1940 in that the 1939 uses wingnuts near the rear axle to fasten the side covers while the 1940 uses springs.  If you zoom on the green bike photo you can see the wingnuts.

It has been stated that Simplex made four 1939s and around one hundred of the 1940s.  In addition, the 1939s were green while the 1940s came in bright silver for its safety at night.

I love this!

A good welder friend of mine from my work made this for a Christmas present for me.   Being a machinist and always wanting to have things 'spot on' I love how abstract it is.   I sandblasted it then rushed the rusting process with hydrogen peroxide, vinegar, salt.

My whole life I have been working to get rid of rust now I am putting it back.  But for this it works!

After two years of great perseverance, I finally own the correct Miller generator for the Serviglide!  After a few fallen attempts through that time, I managed to locate a guy in Argentina who had one. Whereas he did not sell internationally he had a friend who did on Ebay. This guy (Raul) gave me a heads up right at the time he posted it so I could swoop in immediately and buy it.  Then it was just 13 days of waiting until it arrived.   It was a Kodak moment for sure!

I have it restored back to service ready condition.  Many people say that they were black.  There wasn't any black paint on this one or the one that came with the Glide.  However, I have quite a few of the other models that have the red side light molded in them and there are some of those that are black.

Over time collecting Miller generators I managed to get the wheel guard and an array of parts.  I had a wheel and the guard parkerized as that seemed the nearest to original.

I saw some speedometers and parts at Waynes' recently while visiting him.  I think he can help you.

Waynes' number is 256-565-8402     Decatur, Alabama

There is a great amount of the keyway left in the flywheel to identify its location.  If you were to machine a copper key to fit the slot and secure it in position, you can then fill the missing voids with weld.  Remove the copper key and clean up welds.

I have heard of people using graphite keys.  Then brazing.  The key locates the flywheel.  The taper holds it.

The crank is another story!  Not much of the original key slot left but maybe enough to get the job done!

If you have the means just get busy.  It's only steel!

A few weeks ago Bob Filip(son of original owner) messaged me out of the blue to tell me he had found the original registrations for the Serviglide.  A temporary registration and the permanent registration.  He mailed them out right away.

 I was ecstatic!

Pics show front and back of each.

View Dave Cocina's' 1947 in the restorations category.     "servi-cycle 47 number 2"

Looks a lot like yours.

I am calling it 1946 or maybe early to mid 1947  Your bike doesn't have the lower hole for the '48 style breather that was used on late 47s

Pic from H16218.  Nearly the end of 1947 models
