This is 2 pictures of my handle bars. there is a notch on the right side and the rightside is about 1" shorter. Is this correct or has some one altered them? When I got the bike it had wizzer controles on it. Bill Marcum 8)

That is how the handlebars are made. The notch accommodates the internal throttle that uses the slide style. Simplex used this style on the later bikes, somewhere around 1950, but don't quote me on the year. The early style used pins, and the tubes were the same length on each side.
Btw, Wayne's reproduction handlebars do not have the notch, and is not needed. His slide throttle does not include the reinforcement piece, and is also not needed as he builds them out of a heavier material.
Just wait to you put one of these together. It had me scratching my head for a few minutes. Before putting it together, run a sanding scroll on a die grinder inside the rotating tube, this made it operate much smoother.

Mine is at the powdercoaters with the frame. Should be done Monday. Since the chrome was bad, I decided to go black. I made sure to tape the line where they need to mask off the throttle side.

Arghhh....had a little time to kill, so thought I'd assemble the handle bar throttle. Unfortunately, when I dumped the parts out of the baggy, the clamp assembly (#766) wasn't there. I remember when taking the handlebars apart, the clamp fell out onto the floor by the bench & I remember picking it up & doing a "ah yes, now I understand how it all works", but I don't know why I wouldn't have put it into the bag with the rest of the parts.
Does anyone have one laying around that they could trace & send me the drawing? (of course, that's the only way I'll find where I put the original).
Also, did you need to use any glue on the new grips?

Mike, haven't taken mine apart yet but plan on working on simplex this weekend if you still need the drawing I can pop that apart and get you one.

thanks Jeremy. Yes if you don't mind, make a tracing of one of the pieces of that clamp. I've already got one piece made (I'll post a picture tomorrow), but had to come over to the house to watch an old episode of the woodwright shop on pbs before I got the 2nd piece made. I cut them both from one large metal washer.
I spent another 45 minutes looking for that darned thing tonight with no luck.....who knows where I layed it down. I figure that once I get done making the replacement, I'll find the original.....

That's the way its is in my shop. Spend hours looking then days getting a replacement then it sets right in the one place you know you looked at 50+ times. But if it wasn't for murphy's law things would be to easy.

Here's a few pic's of the throttle mechanizm & the 2 clamp pieces I had to re-create. The I.D. of the handle bar is 3/4", so I took two like sized washers & layed them on a big washer, then cut them out & belt sanded the radius. I then used a small file to fine tune the notches to make them fit the insert correctly. A couple holes & some threads & we're back in business.

Now to the next question....what are the correct screws & nuts to attach the handle bar to the anchor plate. My bike had round head screws w/ square nuts (no lockwashers).
(also, I always assumed that the anchor plates were painted black, but the parts catalog says to "state color" when ordering a replacement part....hmmm).

Bill, all I need is a description of the proper 4 nuts / bolts / washers used to attached the handle bars to the plate. I don't think the ones on my bike were original (but don't know that for sure).

Mike The bolts are 1/4" buy 1 1/2 " fine thread two flat washers on the bottom side and a locking nut on the bottom. I am attaching a picture too. Bill Marcum 8)

Hmmm....Sure is odd they'd use plain hex head bolts. Not very glamorous for hardware that is right out there in front of God & everybody. I'll have to think about that a little bit. I may want a round headed fastener instead.

Mike when I was building my bike I didn't have a whole set of anything. I took stainless steel carriage bolts and rounded the heads to fit the handle bar after smoothing the square shoulders then buff to a high shine.

I was thinking of doing something very similar. I have a lot of stainless hardware laying around from the cemetary projects I've worked on.

You will need a steel bar about the same size with a hole then just hammer away and shape it the way you like.

Mike, I also used stainless carriage bolts, but I hand filed each hole square. A bit tedious, but a nice fit, and tightens up nice without spinning.

BTW, my all 3 of my bikes had the same hex head fasteners, so I would assume that is factory correct.

I was thinking in the same lines, only I was only going to file 2 corners of the holes and remove 2 corners from the bolts. I'll use ny-lok nuts instead of lockwashers.

I am going to have to take points off for incorrect bolts to the handle bars when I judge your bike. LOL I agree it is your bike do what ever you want . I like the idea of stainless steel but I would go with acorn nuts facing up. Just my 2 cents ( where is the cent button on this key board ) or $.02 worth. Keep up the good work ! Bill Marcum 8)

Hmmm...I hadn't thought about acorn nuts. I have a whole box full of 1/4" acorn nuts. Sounds easier than making the modifications.

Haha, LOL. I definitely used some non-stock hardware on mine. I used a bunch of stainless, and quite a few nylock fasteners. These bikes vibrate when up at speed, and I didn't want things coming loose.

Our Studebaker club is called the "Studebaker Drivers Club". We believe in driving them, not just looking at them (some people don't get it thou and like to trailer their cars). At the conventions, my buddies & I will set around at night having a cold one or two in the parking area & taking bets on who has the most bugs on the front of their car......while other people are out there late into the night with their feather dusters. Tell me which group has more fun....

I have a 59 Apache 4x4 . I built off a j10 jeep frame. I keep it out of the winter slop the rest of the time its my daily driver along with my service trucks. The simplex will definitely get rode around town as well

I used to drive Jeep J10 trucks. If you could still find one that the bed wasn't rusted out, I'd still be driving them (even thou they only got 12mpg).

The last 2 trucks I had were 82 models. One was a black Laredo with all the fancy trim, from Georgia & rust free; and the other was a rare step side that came from Florida & was also rust free. If you check out the Full Size Jeep sites (I guess it's still around), they had my black truck as one of the home page images.

Pic of my 59 chev stepside last fall . Complete with Michigan rust . but it runs and we have fun with it . Has the original 235 motor. one more project , I will try to get a better pictue later . Might drive it to one of the events this year with the Simplex in the back. Bill Marcum 8)

That looks like a nice truck Bill, who would have thought there would be two guys in the world owning black 59 Chevy trucks and Simplex motorcycles ! Mine was a 235 , 4 speed , longed , 3/4 ton , complete with plenty Illinois rust. Now the cab is all new lowers , the fenders, doors, and bed are new repops , and drivetrain is Chevy 350, 400 turbo, jeep quadratrac with 411s . I still haven't painted doors. Seems like I get close but never quite done LOL.
