Post by: Bruce on October 23, 2013, 04:07:35 PM
What is the purpose of two filler caps on these bikes?

So the tank can be filled twice as fast .

Actually , they didn't want to take any chances on leaving anyone out ... :D

Seriously , I have no idea other than maybe they had double ordered filler necks and caps ???

Pete . :)

My opinion is Paul was sorta the design master of what his bikes would look like, and since his "era" growing up was in the early 30's, he keep with the styling from that era.  Many bikes in the 20's & 30's had multiple caps on the tank (oil, gas, etc).  I think he was trying to give you the illusion of getting more for your buck.

I agree with Mike that it was for style.  The earliest bikes had a center fill cap, the went to a single fill, right side cap, and then on to the dual cap tank starting with the automatic era.  Some of the late tanks were also made with a single fill, either left or right side fill.
