Title: Portland Roll call
Post by: kartjockey on June 08, 2019, 08:00:30 AM
Well Gents!  The time is here.  Time to get ready for Portland.  So how many of us are going?  I will be leaving work early on Monday the 22nd then I will stay to the end as Travis and I will attending the Banquet dinner.  That places us late on Sunday.  I took that Monday off as well.  We will tent camp and again and sleep with the Simplexes!

Hi Everyone-
I know that I rarely post here on the forum, but...

I am seriously considering going to Portland for 2019. I could make it work with my schedule this year, but could only be there for a day or maybe day-and-a-half as I would be traveling enroute to another location and Portland would be something of a “layover” on the drive.

I’ve been to Portland before, but not for quite a few years now, and know that the real action is well ahead of the actual meet dates. I am definitely not going to hit it on Saturday or (eek!) Sunday as the place empties out. So, the question becomes what day should I target this year. Seems like Wednesday or Thursday of the show week would be best?

Hi Guys,

I know that I've been off the grid for awhile. Been super busy at work and dealing with some health issues. We are not going to make it this year. :-( I am going to have a hip replacement on July 12th. We are sort of bummed that my surgery worked out this way. I've been fighting this for a couple of years now.
We will be back next year with a refurbished body & bikes. ;-) Please post pics and I'd also like to know about where and when next's years event will be held.

Enjoy and I hope you get Great weather!!!!

Rick,
Looks like I will have some free time on my hands. Maybe I can get the website updated.

Sorry to hear Dave.  I hope you heal up quickly.  I have a buddy that had one of hips done a few years back and he says it has made his life much more pleasant, no more pain sleeping.

Hopefully you can  get the website over to the new version so we can keep this thing going!

Hey,

Thanks, I have heard a lot of stories like that. That's why I didn't put it off any longer. I'll do my best with the web site. I will get in touch after you come back from Portland. By then I should be getting around and not working on rehab as much. Talk to you then and say Hey! to everyone at Portland for us. We are really going to miss being there.

Have fun! Don't spend to much money! :)

All,

I almost forgot. I will be canceling my restorations at the Holiday Inn. I have Monday thru Saturday night. Check out Sunday.

I will give it a day for anyone to get back to me before I cancel.

:-)

I just got a reservation there 4 days ago.  I have been trying for the last 6 months, and even booked a room at the Randolph inn in Winchester just in case.  I must have lucked out and someone else cancelled their reservation.

Well, I didn't end up going to Portland. It ended up just being too much of a detour from the trip route and timeline that I needed to be on with the family for us to get out to Portland. I'll get back there at some point!

Sounds like it went about like usual - good event for those able to come early and hugely disappointing for those that couldn't get there until late into the "official" dates. I noticed quite a few comments on the VMBC Facebook page about the place being a ghost town particularly on Saturday and Sunday.

My take is that so long as the fairgrounds allow VMBC attendees in to camp/setup far, far in advance of the actual meet dates, the club will never be able to control the dates and will ALWAYS have a problem with those that show up a week early and then pull out of Portland on the Friday or early Saturday or the actual meet dates - some even earlier than that. Not worth getting upset about since neither side seems interested in making changes, just something to keep in mind when planning for Portland.

There REALLY aren't any problems.  It's fun from start to finish regardless of when you arrive or leave.  I found one of my better buys on the very last day of the meet one year.

I agree...I like Portland and would have been happy to be there on any of the days.

Early arrivals and early departures happen at every meet, show, and swap all over the country. I’ve been to many and see it everywhere. Just the way it is in this hobby. I learned that a long time ago as well.

What I was getting at in my previous post was this was the first time I have noticed a handful of upset folks taking to the club’s Facebook page to complain about it. The VMBC meet has always been like that and probably always will be, especially because of the fairgrounds camping policies.

Like I said, not worth getting upset about.

I still wish I was there. Heck, I wish every weekend was like Portland!
