Title: Tank decals
Post by: Sonrisers on February 23, 2013, 11:31:26 AM
Any one have pics of original tank decals. I have a 55 simplex and would like to see what was original to that bike as well as other years. I have a vinyl cutter and would like to cut replicas of the originals out of vinyl. I can usually duplicate these if I have a good solid close up picture. I've seen alot of pics on the forum, but haven't fould a good close up pic. Thanks, James

Here ya go :

Late model tank decal .

It seems to me that the red lettering could ( should ) be a bit thinner or less pronounced .

Yes, my wife and I have a vinyl sign business. What I would make would be a vinyl sticker, not a "water slide". I read in another post that some don't like the vinyl b/c it may not hold up to gas spillage, and may seem too thick. I'm not worried about that b/c I can alwas cut another, but I can see why others would want the water slide. If anyone is wanting decals or even simplex stickers for bumper stickers or window graphics, I would be willing to see what I can do, I can cut big or small. I would also like to see some big, bold pics of any other decals that simplex had. I've seen the winged decal on ebay and other places, but can't find a good enough picture to duplicate it. The pic that was posted just ahead of this post should work perfect. Let me know.

Bt the way, I am planning on powder coating my frame and tank a bright yellow, Is it gonna be considered a sin in the simplex community if I make my decal for my bike black and white instead of red and white? I'd hate to get "shunned" by the experts. May not seem like a big deal, but I would like to hear some feedback.
Thanks in advance. James

We'll get over it!!!  A lot can happen in a couple of years!  Just kidding!  You'll see a lot of color schemes WHEN you are in Portland.  One guy had John Deere colors for crying out loud.  There were some very well done and extravagant rides.  To check out some of them look for the Portland pictures here.

This is what you'll see when you go to Portland.  Except your bike will be tucked in there too!  For the record,  it's about a 140 days!  Book your motels now!

Tom, will you have the other bike you are working on done?  I just need to disassemble my truck and paint it, and I am working on a 55 automatic also.  The 55 will be a ratbike, but with a rebuilt motor and transmission.

I saw a few bikes at Portland that had poor condition vinyl decals due to gas spillage.

I'd like to see a "Simplex" bumper sticker (or window sticker to go in the corner of my back window).  It could be the winged logo with our website address across the bottom.

I would like a winged decal that could go on the back of my enclosed trailer.  Maybe 18-24" wide?

What is the show in portland called? I hear alot about it here on the forum. Thanks for the winged decal, perfect for what I needed. 4 different colors, so it may be challenging.

The show is the Vintage Motor Bike Club meet, or VMBC for short.  It is the largest small bike show in the world.  Some people camp out for a week or more, even though the show officially lasts 5 days. Get there early for the best deals!  Early means a day or 2 before the first official day.  Dates for 2013 are July 20-24. It is held at the Jay County Fairgrounds in Portland Indiana.

Rick, don't know if I'll have my other bike done or not but I should have something to show. I guess you could call mine a rat bike as well.  Different handle bars and mounts. Different seat. Etc.,  etc. Trying to get another ride ready by spring time to ride to work. (1968 Sears 250 twingle)  Plus I would like to enter my Servi and my 1966 sears in the judging so gonna try to bring a few bikes to Portland.  Plus the minibikes!!!

Been working on the winged decal. We made one up the other day, and it turned out pretty good, but don't have the right color of vinyl for the silver, used white instead. The winged decal will have to be pretty big, like 18" wide or so, because all I have now is a cutter and the lettering is really small, would work great if I had a vinyl printer. Something big like this would look really good on a banner... or trailer like rick was talking about. I'll keep you posted on the progress. Also still looking into water slides.

Hey Bob, did you ever get your bike running or did you sell it?  I can't believe how much participation we are getting here, I would never have thought there would be this much interest.

Order goes in for the silver on Friday or mon. Then it just a matter of finding time to get cut and done. Water slides aren't working like I planned, I still have to figure out how to do those, I think I can do the winged decal, but the "Simplex automatic" is turning out to be a bit more challenging.

Here is a pic of the finished winged decal. Thought I would post a pic before I put the application tape on it to ship it. This one is aprox 24"x12'. This logo has 4 different colors and has 3 seperate layers, would go great on a larger smoothe surface. It can be put on a banner or painted metal sign also. One this size is $39. We could try to make this one in a bumper sticker size without the small lettering. I think we could still put the web site on it , but not the small lettering in the shield. If anyone is interested , let me know.

Rick that is nice planning on putting mine on front of the rock shield but do me a favor. Please don't park close to me. Your trailer would make mine look like a gut wagon even after I paint it. Now you do know I'm pulling Your chain. LoL

WHAT! You want ME to paint over all this pretty rust.          Yea its going to get painted. I was just getting the placement for the wheel locks to keep the wheel in place.  Had to snap a shot while it was there.  I still got to finish it paint it get it weighed and tag it all while working 7 days a week.

We have found a source for printing on vinyl, so if anybod is interested we can try to get some smaller bumper sticker sized decals made up of the winged decal with the website. We have to outsource the printing, so we will need to know how many you are wanting. Also would like suggestions on size and any other suggestions anybody may have. I need to know the size, and aprox how many before I can quote an exact price, but I'm thinking they will be less than $8 a piece. They may be less, but will have to wait and see. Let me know asap if you are interested.

Well I'm almost done with the trailer. Got a coat of primer even in a gale force winds blowing so it's looking better I think. Just a tweak here and there then it time 8) for tags.

I have also built 2 car trailers in my garage. Not great pictures, but you can see one of them here.

I also built the drag car, which started as a bare frame. I built everything else, including the tin work and paint.

Reese your trailer looks more upscale than my small trailer.  I 've got one made from an old pop up camper.  I put a piece of OSB up in front for a shield when I brought the Victory home from Cleveland.  Looks hokey but got the job done.  I'll probably use it to bring the stuff to Portland this year.

Good looking cars Rick.  I gave up racing when I figured out there was always somebody with more money who could go faster than me.

Mike, I too was thinking about using a pop up camper frame for my trailer that way you have a place to get out of the rain. Seeing I was short on time I chose my grandmothers trailer to retrofit.

Rick, nice car!  My 76 SB will more than likely become a trike later this year. I bet its nice to have concrete to work on, I'll need to try it some day. Lol

Well a couple of rattle cans down and it's looking better. I even took some time to clean the wheels.  I'm even about running a few pin stripes to set it off. That is if Pete will tell me what type of paint he used again. So here's a couple more pictures.

Reese ,

I used an alkyd paint , but I don't recall the brand . It was exterior and best on metals .

I didn't thin it . I poured it into the stripping tool straight from the can . I used paint thinner to clean up .

If I get a revelation about the brand , I'll post it .

Pete . :)

Reese, trailer is looking pretty good. We have decided to print your decals instead of cut them like the picture we posted earlier, and the one Rick got. It will be printed on alot better quality vinyl than what we use when we are just cutting decals. It is the same vinyl that is used to wrap vehicles, and has air release adhesive, that means alot easier to install, and no bubbles. It is a more expensive vinyl, so we are not able to make it larger, so it will be 24"x 12". Rick, I think yours would look alot bettter if it were printed also, so we will try to have an extra when we go to portland, and will swap yours then. If anybody else is wanting a winged decal with the web site, let me know, they are $39 plus  shipping, and will look just like the pic posted earlier. Also have 11"x4" printed bumper stickers available for $6.50 ea plus shipping, let me know.
