What Year is my Bike? / Re: Database for Model Changes
« on: March 07, 2014, 04:03:58 AM »
I am working on a database which outlines the changes Simplex made throughout the years to help people figure out what year their bike might be.  I'm scrounging back thru all the literature as well as what knowledge we've gained over the last couple years.

Once we've got a  rough draft ironed out, I'll post it here for you to check out & offer additional info.  Once we're happy with it I'll ask Rick to turn it into a sticky.

One thing I uncovered was in regard to front fork springs.  A few weeks ago someone said their bike had 4 small springs instead of 2 long springs.....we all thought they were non-original replacements.....but I know know that the model K bike was so equipted.

Mike, I owned a model K Deluxe, and it did not have the 4 small springs, but had the 2 long ones in chrome.  I have the model K servi-gram at home and I will look and see what it says later today.

Frame, Tank, Seat, Controls, Etc / Re: seat mount

Same seat pans, but without the holes drilled for the rivets to hold the leather on.

The very early bikes did use bike seats; I think they were made by Messenger.

My Seat Pan looks the same.I mounted the seat without the Spacer ( didn't know there was supposed to have one).It doesn't hit the Leaf, but is extremely close.Be a simple thing to make.

I wonder if the spacer was only used on the late, plastic seat covers, as the leather hugs the seat pan closer on the earlier models.

That is a late model seat with plastic cover.  I think the change over was around 1956.  Most of the ones left these days are hard and cracked by age.

Not to say there shouldn't be a spacer, but I have never seen one on any bike I disassembled.
Pete, post the spec on the one you have.

So you don't feel lonely , it's cold here , too :

Pitcher Point, Long Beach
Elevation
36 ft

Now
Overcast with rain for the rest of the day .
Temperature
33.9 °F

Pete . :)

That's not cold!  If it was that warm here, I would have gone and shot a round of sporting clays.  It was around 10 degrees this morning and has warmed up to a balmy 20 degrees this afternoon.

I don't see much hope for a gas tank being made.  The cost to have 2 dies made to press the tanks is just too great.  Who is going to step up for $10,000-15,000 to buy the dies?  You would have to sell at least 100 tanks at a price of around $300 each to break even.

That's a nice looking bike.  Do I have you in the registry yet?  If not, send me a PM with your real name & the state you live in & I'll get you added.

I don't see how anyone can have less than 3k wrapped up in one these days even if you have all of the parts to start with.
Mike Sal

Looking good!

I agree with Mike.  It seems that these bikes are more valuable as individual parts than they are as a whole.  With some of the current eBay prices for gas tanks, fenders, automatic transmissions, ect, you could part out the bike for more than just about anyone is willing to pay for one.

Tom, the one you made was much nicer!  If you put that one in, the bike might not run as good.  Now that would be a dilemma, stock or better running.  Lol

Sorry to hear that Larry.  Did you try to get the police involved to recover it?  That guy also sold a servi-cycle around the same time, was that yours also?

I hope he heals quickly.  I am looking forward to visiting with him at Portland again this year.  Mike, are you going this year?

There is one on eBay right now, but I think it is way overpriced for what it is.  If it was rebuilt, it would be worth the asking price, IMHO.

Hi Ricks,
Thought about that myself. I'll be watching for a worthy candidate.
Did you leave it belt drive or did you change it to chain.
If you don't mind, I would love to see a few pic. of it.
Cheers
Stafford

I have not done a 2 wheel conversion, but I did do a 3 wheel truck with a Honda gx200 electric start. I used all belt drive.  There is a complete build thread on here.

I have another bike waiting for a Gc190 conversion, and it will be belt drive with a torque convertor. I am currently working on a late model simplex sportsman, and that will be ready for the VMBC show in Portland this year.

Hi Guys,
Just curious if anyone has heard from Hot Rod Harry about progress on his bike.
Did he ever send a pic. of the mock up? I guess I missed my chance on the first reproduction of the Simplex.
I would be interested in a new one that I could ride daily and not need to worry about parts and such.
I owned a reproduction Messerschmitt for 12 years. It used a Honda drivetrain so it was dependable and parts was never a problem. I drove it everywhere and never had a problem. It had the look and feel of a true classic with the dependability of a Honda. I think a Simplex with a little more hp. would be nice too. So it could pull my fat butt up a hill.  (;-{)>
Just checking; let me know if you hear anything.

Just build a real simplex with a Honda gc190 engine.  Plenty of power to go 50 mph and there are a ton of simplex frames out there without engines.
Cheers
Stafford
