Off Topic / CoVid 19 and Retirement
« on: April 05, 2020, 09:03:14 AM »
I hope everyone here is healthy and is doing all they can to avoid catching the virus.  It should be giving many of us time to catch up on all our projects.  Remember, there is no need to social distance from a Simplex!

On another note, last Saturday was my last day as an air traffic controller!  As of March 29, I have joined the group of retiree's.  I foresee much more available time to play with my Simplex projects, take care of some house projects that I have put off, and would like to start on a Porsche 550 replica in the next year or so.

Lets here from you guys; what are you working on or doing during the crisis?

Restoration Projects / 1955 Anniversary Bike
« on: March 18, 2020, 02:01:06 PM »
I bought a couple of frames and other parts last year.  One of the frames I acquired is a 1955, which happens to be the 20th anniversary of Simplex.  For that one year, they made a special edition bike, which, as far as Tom and I can determine, existed of an anniversary decal on the front fender and arrowhead decals on both fenders.  In Portland 2018, I happened to buy a pair of anniversary fenders.  To me, this was the start of a new project.

The new decal shown below was created from a picture taken of the fender below. Tom has a guy near him that cleaned it up and produced that sticker.  Tom now has it available in a waterslide decal as original, I believe.  He also has the arrowheads for the side of the fenders.

Restoration Projects / My Calendar Bike

I found this picture last week while looking for something else Simplex.  This was taken at the AMCA meet in Rhinebeck, NY  in 2018.  It was shot about 2 months before I sold the bike in July, 2018 at Portland.  Not even a credit to the builder. Boo!

I restored this bike back in 2012.  I sold it to Rod in 2016.  He has recently passed away and his widow would like to sell it to a Simplex enthusiast. See thread on the bike here.

Other Things Simplex / 20h Anniversary Bikes
« on: March 13, 2019, 06:54:29 AM »
KartJockey and I have been trying to run down leads on 20th anniversary bikes.  We know they made fender decals for these, but we do not know if there was a special tank decal.  There are 2 pictures in Gary Wollard's book that lead us to speculate there might have been a thought to do it, but wasn't carried through. If anyone has a photo of a anniversary tank decal, please post it!

Frame, Tank, Seat, Controls, Etc / Rear Rack
« on: August 07, 2018, 04:59:47 AM »
This rear rack is up for sale on eBay.  Is this a factory built rack?  If so, what years?  All the racks I am familiar with are round tube.

Other Things Simplex / eBay sellers
« on: June 12, 2018, 06:07:29 AM »
These guys that are asking crazy prices on eBay are going to kill the restoration of Simplex bikes.  When a nicely restored Servi-Cycle brings $5000-5500, how can we possibly justify paying $300 per wheel, $500 for a front end, $200 for a seat pan, ect.  At these prices, it would take a least $10,000 to build a nice bike.

I would encourage everyone here to NOT PAY those prices, let their stuff rot on eBay forever, and maybe they will readjust their thinking of value.  These over inflated prices seem to be stemming from bnemotorbikes, which just lists things for ridiculous prices but doesn't seem to sell anything.

Other Things Simplex / Made some parts
« on: May 27, 2018, 02:51:39 PM »
While working on the truck, I needed an ignition tower.  I could just order one from Wayne, but what's the fun in that.  A piece of hex bar and tube and viola, ignition towers.

While I was at it, I decided to do something with all the old steel automatic pulleys I have been saving.  I have never found one that I thought was usable, as they were all a little rusty and the bearings were very gritty.   I ordered a few bearings and 1/8 steel rivets, machined the old rivet heads off and separated the sheaves.  I then blasted them and reassembled with the new bearings.

Other Things Simplex / Out Of Winter Hibernation
« on: April 23, 2018, 07:05:16 AM »
Took the restored bike out of winter storage this morning.  I put fresh gas in it and it didn't want to start up.  Took six kicks before it would run!  LOL  Took it for a spin, and all seems good.  All that's left is to change the oil.   ;) ;)
