Simplex Trucks / New 1954 Truck
« on: February 04, 2018, 11:18:32 AM »
My latest project is a 1954 Truck.  I am building this one with a stock motor and automatic clutch, unlike my last project that used a honda clone motor.  I have gone as far as converting to sealed bearings front and rear, as Simplex did on the trucks.  I replicated the brake system in the late style, which I believe started on the 1953 model.

Buy, Sell, Trade / 1946 on eBay
« on: August 30, 2017, 06:03:52 AM »
Another bike on eBay.  Wrong side of the country for me, and a little high on price, but looks original.

Tom, check out the air cleaner, just like on Dave's bike!

Wheels & Tires / Hub Conversion to sealed bearings
« on: August 19, 2017, 08:55:52 AM »
I wanted to use sealed bearings on my secret project, so this is how I am converting them.

The front, I skinned the spoke flanges off the old hub. I then turned a piece of 1 1/2" DOM tube to size and pressed the flanges back on.  The tube is .118" walled, which leave an id of 1.124".  This is perfect for a press fit 1 1/8" of flanged bearing. I put a spacer tube between the bearings for support.

On the rear., I turned the inside of the hubs to 1.25" and made inserts to adapt to the 1.125" bearings. The insets are flanged to account for the lack of nuts on the original.

These bearings use 1/2" axles, btw.

This is hint #2 as to what I'm building! Fell free to guess.

Wheels & Tires / Making new backing plates
« on: August 16, 2017, 05:04:30 PM »
I have an old beat up rear brake backing plate that was in less than usable condition.  I have noticed these early plates were built differently, and with a much thinner material than the late plates.  What is a person to do?  Take apart the old plate to use as a template, and build new ones, but with thicker material.

Picture #

1 Old brake disassembled
2&3 Late Style brake
4 Old Style brake
5 New Front Plate
6&7 New rear Brakes

Notice how the late brakes use an offset in the plate, whereas the early use a spacer bar. The spacer is 3/16", but provides little additional support.  The late style is 3/16 plate, much more stout than the 1/8 used in the early style.

I decided to make a couple of front plates while I was at it, as I have another front drum without the matching plate.

I still have to machine the pivots and install them, but I had to order some bar stock to make them.

Buy, Sell, Trade / Bike on eBay

Way too much money for a bike that isn't perfect in every way.  I have never heard of an Automatic bringing that kind of money, even for the best of the best.

I'm thinking closer to $4000 is about tops on this bike, but who knows?

As usual, I had a great time! Spent a lot of time on the Hill with Tom, Travis, Reese, Dave, Bob U, Mike, Ernie, Bob K and Bruce.  We had many people stop by and chat about Simplex all meet long.  I encourage all to attend one of these meets and get to know the people involved.  These are all first rate people looking to have fun with our hobby.

The Diamond T was awesome, with Cummins Diesel power.

The Simplex scooter went home with one of our members.
