OK Scott, you have to post a picture of your lathe.

Well done sir!

I turned the bearing around so the thrust would be in the correct direction and have about .015" end play now.
My inner bearing is Koyo 6205 and no spacer.  I did see a note in the manual that eventually they did not need it.
Thank you,
Scooter

If you used the wide bearing, you probably wouldn't need a spacer at all.  Good that you got it figured out!

They have used 2 different bearings on the inside of the case. I'm not sure why, but I just match it up to the one I remove.

Inside Wide Main  5205-2RS  25x52x20.6
inside Narrow Main 6205-2RS  25x52x15
Outside Main  6304-2RS  20x52x15

I have also seen the wider bearing come in a single row bearing, as opposed to the double row number I posted.  I'm not sure it matters at all.

I’ve built numerous model M engines, and have never seen a bearing like that.  What is the bearing number?

Do NOT pound bearings in and out of the case, that is how you crack the case.  The procedure is to heat the case, I like doing it on the gas grill outside so it doesn’t stink up the house.  The bearings will just about fall out. Installation is the same, except I put the bearings in the freezer for about 30 minutes, and they go right in without  having to beat on anything.

I have an order in with Wayne about 3 weeks now.  Haven't heard a word from him.

I know he's a one-man show, so I'm a bit reluctant to bug him.
Call him. He is old and does forget occasionally.

This forum is mostly for Simplex Servi-Cycles.  While they did build a bicycle for a short period of time, I doubt they built more than a couple hundred.  There are many companies that used the Simplex name, but the one we deal with here is The Simplex Manufacturing Co, of New Orleans.

Wayne has new pistons available.  He probably has some used ones also.

That one was silver soldered. He now tig welds them. Silver solder is expensive.

Here is a picture of the crank that Wollard “fixed.”  It looks like he also tried to peen the material to tighten up the keyway.  It lasted about 10 seconds before letting go.  Wayne made a new shaft and used the old counterweight.  Interesting counterweight on this crank, Gary drilled it and added heavy material.  I think that helped smooth out the engine, as when I built this motor, it ran really smooth and strong.

Last picture is with the new shaft.

27
That’s a mess.  Brazing the keyway has zero chance of holding up.  I worked on a motor that Gary Wollard had tried doing just that, and it failed immediately.

If you have a lathe and a mill, mig or tig would probably work.  The other option is send it to Wayne, he can replace the shaft with a new on.  He can also put a center into the flywheel.

But , why don't I see a rear brake ?

Looks factory to me.  Are your grounds good?  I powder coat my frames, and they do not conduct a ground.

Some of the old timers used to talk about this happening, but I have never seen it, and I have built 7 engines.  Some of them thought we should be pinning the rings so they don’t rotate.
