Title: Vintage Motor Bike Club Meet
Post by: Ricks on June 21, 2011, 05:35:03 AM
Is anyone going to the VMBC meet in Portland, IN?  The event takes place July 11-15, and from what I've been told is the largest meet of its kind each year.

I'm thinking about driving there, as I have a line on another parts bike that I may buy on the way there.

I went a couple of times and if you are planning to buy any bikes coming in off the street you better be at the gate waiting  :)  It's a darn good show.

I got here this evening, sunday, and the event doesn't officially start until Tuesday, but the place is packed!  I took a quick walk around and they have everything imaginable. I will take a ton of pictures and post some when I get home.

What days are the best to attend the convention?  I don't think I can pull the entire week.

Mike, I went last year, got there on the sunday before it officially starts, and the place was already packed.  I had a great time just walking around, talking to people, seeing all kinds of stuff I never knew existed.  I didn't even bring a bike last year as mine was not quite finished, unless you count the 54 I bought in Ohio on the way there.  I could have sold it for twice the money I paid, judging by the prices I saw on some bikes.

When the meet gets closer, we will have to set up a day and time to get together with everyone.  I say over at the wings and rings restaurant!

Yes, it looked like everything was in full swing.  I have been told that if you see something you want, jump on it quick!

I joined the yahoo group the vmbc guys have (just type in vintage motor bike club....only a small handful of guys are on it & it's pretty slow on traffic) a few days go & asked them the same question regarding when to show up.  It appears that if you want to shop, show up Friday or Saturday.  If you want to hang out & participate in the activities, anytime during the week is good.  I'm kinda curious as to what kinds of stuff do they auction on Wednesday....just donated stuff, personal stuff....??

I guess I'll have to wait until the time gets a little closer.  At least there's no reason my bike won't be ready to take along.

I just got the spring issue of the vmbc magazine & there's a few pic's of some Simplexes.  Nice story about a guy who got a Simplex Motor Scooter in 1960 as a kid, then got another one in '08.

Oops, sorry for not clarifying that.  Yes, the weekend before the meet officially opens is when things are hopping according to the vmbc guys I've talked to.

Prior to the official opening, the town park charges 15 bucks a night to camp in the park.  Once the meet starts, the club takes over & charges 60 dollars for the week (no dailey rate).

I joined in december, so I got to donate 6 months of dues to the club, as I have to re-up in July.  I had the archives guy send me the list of back issues they're trying to get rid of & am ordering several so I can read up on "all things motor bike".  I have a buddy that lives in the same town as the guy so, he's going to pick them up & save me the shipping costs.  If any of you are interested in old copies, let me know & I'll add them to the list (email me if you want a copy of the list.....it's doesn't really tell you anything other than the year & quarter that's available).

Found out they have showers on site.  It sounds like it's camping for me unless this summer turns into blast furnace hot.

It's a 5 hour drive for me.  Along with the Simplex, I'm thinking of bringing some of my old stuff out of the barn to see if I can sell it......one of those old french made mopeds from the mid-60's, a honda passport, one of those little yellow honda's (don't remember what they were called)....I didn't realize I'd gathered so much little bike stuff.

Be patient with them on getting your membership stuff sent out.  They are currently wihtout a secretary & the president is carrying the ball.  Darren seems like a nice guy & will help with any questions.  You might also want to sign up on their yahoo group.  Not many on there at them moment, but hopefully it will build (their official website is not interactive).

I quized the VMBC prez again about adding our website as a link on their site.  He said he'd try to get it done soon.  He did add our link to their yahoo group site.

Anyone who's recently joined the VMBC, you can buy past issues of their magazine.  They had a ton of left over issues, but the guy storing them decided to re-cycle about 7,000 copies (what a waste...).  Of the population that's left, if you want one that 5 years old or newer, they are 5 bucks apiece.  If they're older than 5 years, they are a dollar a piece.
