Other Things Simplex / Re: Portland 2016
« on: July 19, 2016, 03:43:22 PM »
I was so aggravated at the bike when it wouldn't run at Portland, I brought it home & didn't touch it till last night.....nothing like waiting till the last minute huh....

I finally got the Kubelwagen project finished & been having fun with it.  I"ve still got a studebaker in the shop that needs a lot of attention, but just didn't want to miss out on portland.  I'm sweating right now that the new battery for the little blue honda will show up tomorrow....we plan to leave tomorrow night.

Engine & Transmission / Re: Phelon Wiring
« on: July 19, 2016, 03:38:05 PM »
When wiring that Phalon up, be sure to secure the wires far enough away from the flywheel that the magnets don't rub on them.  In the attached photos, you can see where I didn't have the ignition wire secured from moving & the magnets eventually rubbed thru.  Those of you who were in Portland 2 years ago saw how frustrated I was when the bike ran great at home, but started only getting partial sparks after arriving.  In the other photo, you can see how the issue caused the coil to overheat & the one terminal "popped" loose.  I"m going to glue it down & clip off the one spark plug wire.

Hello....if any of you remember who I am....sorry I've been away for so long.  Sonya & I will arrive sometime Thursday.

Remember how my bike wouldn't stay running when I brought it last time?  It was a stupid mistake inside the flywheel (I'll post a pic in the motor section later).

Will be glad to see you again at Portland.

Rob, post up your frame & motor number.  I wonder if your bike may be a '56 rather than 57 (brake switch on top side of frame rail, bolt on rear wheel pulley, & leather seat rather than plastic)?

Sonya & I drove home last night after the banquet, just under 300 miles.  Went thru a pretty strong rain in Indianapolis & took a 2 hour nap at a rest area.  Got home right at 3am.

Sorry to have missed so many of you.  Next year won't have a reunion to interfere so will be able to come sooner.....we'll be like the old timers....come early, leave early.....

They had separate cash door prizes for kids under 12...that was a nice idea....

Reese won the long distance award!  I came up goose egg for any door prizes....

Looks like Reese, Janette, me and Sonya are the only ones left.  Reese and I are the only two stingy enough to not blow off tonight's banquet.  We missed Rick by a few minutes this morning.  PD, you were just pulling out of the park when we were pulling in...sorry we missed you.

Although it may have appeared that I fell off the face of the earth, Sonya & I are still kicking.  We have a high school reunion this weekend, so won't arrive till Sunday afternoon unfortunately.  Save a few bargains for us!

Sorry I've not been active with the group for a while, but I've had too many things going on all at the same time....just not enough hours in the day!!!  I actually pulled up the roster today at lunch & will be working on updating it.  I know several guys have written  to me with updates.

Looks like it's going to be an abreviated visit for me this year.  My Hi School reunion is that weekend  I went to one of the smallest schools in our state (20 kids in my graduating class) & we have "all school" reunions every 3 years, where anyone that ever went to school there is invited.  Looks like Thursday afternoon & Friday are the days I have open for Portland.

I want to call it quits in 4 years if Sonya will let me......

Quite the deal about that delta flight going off the runway today.

I see that you have the handle bolted to your beverly shear.  I leave the bolt out so it stores better on the shelf below the work table.  I just slide the handle on & off as needed.

Have you squirted any paint onto a fender yet to see what the "as rolled" surface finish provides?

Yes, I've been busy getting the repro Kubelwagen ready for the upcoming reenacting season.  I've discovered that using metal from old washing machines works pretty good for small forming jobs.  I've been using my HF throatless shear a lot over the last couple weeks.  Ya, the casting was pretty rough & needed to be reworked when I got it about 5 years ago.  The mounting surface was so bad that I still have to put a shim under one corner when I clamp it down to the work table.

For punching holes, if you can find the fake whitney punch tools that come from Taiwan instead of china, the quality is much better.

Yes, the aluminum fenders are a lot faster to fab than steel.  Don't be afraid to use a rose bud torch to anneal the steel inbetween workings.

Regarding the dimples for the fork tubes, you might make the female portion by making a cast of that area from an original that you can use to shove the dowels against in a press.

Nice work Rick.  One of the guys in our blacksmithing group also makes things with these tools.  He used to sell a lot of fenders on ebay.  He has done many demonstrations at our club shop in the past & he can turn out a full size fender in aluminum in about 20 minutes.  Really something to watch him.  And he wasn't using any tools I didn't see in your photos....with maybe only the specialty hammers to use with the shot bag.

I've been meaning to buy a HF (Hazard Fraught) set myself but just haven't done it yet.

The Studebaker I see buried in there is a '56 Hawk (can't tell which one....they made 4 versions that year).  Tell your buddy, if he hasn't already, to get it registered with the studebaker drivers club.  They have a registry for all surviving '56 Hawks (that was the first year for the Golden Hawk models).

What an estate sale this is going to be......

Sorry I've not been more active on the site lately.  Seems I'm going 10 different directions all the time these days.

I do feel thankful about how much this website & group has grown since I joined.  We've got so many well talented people here that almost any Simplex problem can be sorted out in short order.  I think Gary Wollard would have to admit that we've got one of the largest collections of Simplex information on the planet (that's available to the general public).  And you couldn't ask for a better bunch of members.

Hope everyone ate to excess and stayed up too late visiting family yesterday!
