This is so disgusting.......you don't know how envious I am that you have those photos & those memories.  Really really cool.

Please share the frame number & motor number with us so we can get your bike into the registry.

Your bike is only 7 numbers off from my bike (mine is 15249).  what state are you in?  I know the old timers at Portland always debate on whether mine is a '57 or a '58, but the numbers seem to stack up as a '57.  We do know that there were a lot of '57's left over at the end of the year that were sold as '58's, so who really knows.

If your bike is a '58, it must have an earlier transmission in it.  The idler pulley should be stamped steel & the transmission should be bushings instead of bearings (or did you mean the 2 bearings that the axle rides on??)

Do we have your frame/motor number yet for the registry?

The motor number is slightly newer than the normal series, but would be just right if it was a replacement motor early in it's life.  But as we discussed at length at Portland this year, There's lots of mis-matches in Simplex land.

That 2nd digit looks like a 6 to me, which puts you into 1953.  If it's really an 8, then you jump up to 1955.

Any chance you can get a photo of that serial number?  It would be very rare for there to be an inverted number.  There should be 5 digits, all in line with each other.

According to Bob Kerr, a former Simplex employee told him the number was stamped on the plate before it was welded to the frame (he related a story of dropping a box of them one time & they just scooped them up, not paying attention to the order of numbers).

With a 9 as the 2nd digit, a zero should be the 2nd digit....unless it's an extremely rare model that would have a "1" as the first digit.

Is the plate missing from the other bike?

Wayne is not a computer guy.  His contact info is in the vendors section at the bottom of the home page.

If you don't get him at first, keep trying.  He'll eventually be home to answer the phone.

Yes, we have a 1926 T touring & Bob has 3 model T's, so we fell right in with the club.  There were about 25 cars in the tour.  It was kind of neat to ride in the back seat....I've always been the driver or in the front passenger seat.

Bob Kerr & I had talked about going by the Model T museum in Richmond Indiana today since it was along our path home.   When Sonya & I pulled into the parking lot this morning, it was nearly full of model T's & Bob was standing right in the middle of them.  He told us a car club was getting ready to go on a small tour around the area.  A few minutes all the owners came out of the museum to get started & they invited us to ride a long.  Bob hopped into a '25 touring & Sonya & I rode in the back of a 24 touring & they took us on a country drive with a few stops at some historic sites (Richmond had one of the earliest recording studios / record manufacturers in the country....all the great musicians of the day came to Richmond to record their music).

They then told us that they were going to go to a local grass airport where a antique airplane fly in was being held.  That was a hoot also.  The simplex in the back of our truck got a lot of lookers too.  Bob used to have an old plane & he got a real kick out of seeing them too.  We were hoping some real oldies were coming but by the time we left, only some old Stinsons & a model T powered plane were the only really old ones.

It's been an up & down show so far for Sonya & I.  Getting to see all the great Simplex people is on the good side.....the bike deciding not to run is on the bad side.

We got 37 Simplex's together for the photo shoot today....we drew quite a crowd.  It was kinda fun stealing the thunder away from the Cushmans & Whizzers if only for a little while.  There were at least 20 more Simplex bikes out in the park that did not come over for the shoot.

I pulled the carb off & swapped it for the old one just before dark & the bike ran for about 6 seconds......arghhhh.....we'll hit it again in the morning.......

A lot of the gang is here as well as a lot of the Simplex veterans.

had a scare last night....The simplex hadn't been started in a while so decided to take it for a spin & put fresh gas in.....it flooded all over the place.  Had to pull the carb off to get some grit out of the needle.....what a drag.

Will arrive in Portland sometime on Saturday.....

yes, I've been running way too many different directions this summer!!!!  Spent the last 2 weekends in Chicago at my daughter's house, visiting the new grandson and fixing a small car for the son-in-law.  He got the little cracker box car for free from a tennant of one of his rentals....a chevy Aveo....notorious for timing belt failures.  8 bent valves & 8 cracked valve guides.  It was fun working on it & fabricating the tools.  Got it running in time to get home by 11pm last night.....did get to take a break & see a Beatles tribute band playing at their local street festival Saturday night.

I have been asking a lot of dumb questions on the Samba site due to the purchase of the kubelwagen.....I didn't realize there were so many different terms for volkswagen parts.....

I'm still waiting for the rest of my parts to come in from overseas, so the R71 w/ sidecar will not be coming to Portland with us like I'd hoped......

I have to leave Wednesday for a blitz trip to california & won't get home till late Thursday night.....Won't leave much time for packing up the bikes (will bring the blue honda along with the Simplex again this year) & heading to Indianapolis on Friday to see the antique lamp show, then on to Portland from there.......Holy Cow....
