Simplex Trucks / Seat info for Simplex trucks
« on: October 06, 2014, 06:38:57 PM »
The seat on my 1954 Simplex truck is identical to the seat on a 1950 Harley servi-car that i am restoring - i will post pics tomorrow but these seats are a few inches wider than the two wheeled Simplex and have 4 ribs on the bottom side rather than 3 ribs on the two wheel bikes. Even the repop single seat for harleys is the same so I am pretty sure Simplex used the same seats during that time period that the trucks were built. I will also post some measurements.  just a little fyi.

Other Things Simplex / Not a Simplex but still cool!! True barn find!
« on: September 27, 2014, 02:51:51 PM »
A client just dropped this off to my shop for a top to bottom full restoration! It's a 1950 Harley Servi car that has been in the same family since 1951! The last time it was rode was 1968 my customer was 11 years old when his dad put it in the barn because it was smoking a little..46 years later!!! Here it is!!  It's not a Simplex but it's still really cool!! Just wanted to share this with you guys! It's just soooo cool that we can still find neat stuff that has not seen the light of day in years!!

Other Things Simplex / Found a add on Craigslist looking for me! lol!
« on: September 03, 2014, 10:04:38 PM »
I went to a 2 day car cruise "The 28th street Metro cruise" in my home town of Grand Rapids Mi a couple of weeks ago-Its the same as the "Woodward Dream Cruise" in Detroit-only its the weekend after... I rode my Simplex truck all day and went through a whole tank of gas and probably put 50-60 miles on it just cruising up and down and around a 10 mile section of road and just goofing off!...I have done show cars and things but i have never been to a event where what i had has created such a stir!! I had a couple of Magazine guys take pics a few times but never took them seriously lol! so anyway i had a friend contact me today with this Craigslist ad that someone was looking for me with a pic of my Simplex Thought it was kind of funny-lol! here it is- http://grandrapids.craigslist.org/mis/4648241899.html

Other Things Simplex / Picked up a 52 today!
« on: August 14, 2014, 07:18:22 AM »
Picked up a 1952 today completely disassembled the engine too, the worst part about it is that the crash bars are bent pretty hard and that flat piece of metal that comes off the goose neck to hold the seat was broke and replaced and not repaired correctly...I can't imagine hitting something so hard on one of theses bikes that you bend the crash bars 2-3 inches! Ouch!! Lol! I may just use it for parts not sure yet? Everything else is super straight and clean! Notice the original tires with painted on white walls-lol! I know they used to sell that stuff back in the day! You can't even scratch it off with your fingernail? Tough stuff.

Simplex Trucks / Tow bar on my Simplex truck
« on: August 09, 2014, 09:47:34 PM »
After seeing in person all of Jim Lokie's Simplex truck tow bars and  Bob legron's at Portland Bill Erikson sent me pictures of the tow bar on his truck and looking at every picture that I could find I have pretty much come to the conclusion that my tow bar is the same tow bar that was offered as a option for a two wheeled Simplex...as seen in this picture/magazine ad that I included-it is identical! As is the welded on tow bar brackets that are welded to the forks And the way it is designed it would keep a two wheeled bike in the vertical position when being towed behind a car...  it also utilizes a universal mount that can be mounted to any 50's car bumper, The other type tow bars utilize a tow bar that needs a trailer ball to attach the tow bar to the car. Mine is missing one of the  mounting rods that tightened and hold the tow bar to the bumper and also a part that hooks over the top of the bumper, but I have found one of those I just don't have a pic of it yet I will add it when I can. The first pic is 1952 the last 3 are from a 1954 Speigal catalog ad. Simplex was defiantly not consistent from year to year and made a lot of changes on the fly along with the parts they used, and what was installed from year to year when putting these bikes together!

Other Things Simplex / Next year Portland Simplex only ride!
« on: August 04, 2014, 10:24:57 AM »
I think next year we should make it a point to get all the Simplex Servi-cycles together for a nice slow ride that everyone could go on...like after dinner or a little bit later where everyone that is there selling or visiting could go on-like Saturday evening-5 or 10 miles, or whatever? like a poker run or something! even do a ride a couple of times?? I don't really care but I'm just not one to sit in a lounge chair and bench race for the whole weekend...These bikes were built to ride so lets ride them! who is in? any idea's? we have a year!!

Other Things Simplex / Portland 2014
« on: July 20, 2014, 08:26:05 PM »
Just wanted to say THANK YOU! For the incredibly warm and generous welcome that I received from everyone that I had never met before via this website at Portland! Kindra and I had a great time!! I just wanted to share something that I noticed about everyone that I met from the younger or more junior members (well let's just say under 50ish lol!) Rick, Mike, Jim etc..to the senior or older members maybe not even members of this site but guys with a vast amount of Simplex information and knowledge like Bob Legron, Bob Kerr, Jim Lokie, Wayne Mahaffee just to name a few! Your passion is second to none! And everyone's willingness to help, give advice, support, compliment and welcome new blood into the relatively small world of the Simlpex Servi-cycle is to me pretty awesome! You all deserve a pat on the back! And once again Thanks! Semperfi!

Engine & Transmission / Frustrated!
« on: July 13, 2014, 02:37:00 PM »
Ok I'm gonna post a video on how to smash a Simplex engine with a sledgehammer! Original carb would start and run and after awhile stahl....could run for 5-10 min put a brand new carb on and after 5-600 times of kicking this BITCH! Nothing!! I've never worked on a more finicky cantankerous engine in my life!! Needless to say I'm done for today....end of rant. Yes I have fire in both plugs and no junk in tank perfectly clean...float level set at 1.406...I don't get it???

Simplex Trucks / New project! Simplex truck!!
« on: July 06, 2014, 11:51:37 PM »
Drove from Michigan to Brownwood Texas(the middle of the state and in the middle of nowhere!!) to pick up my latest project! 1953, or 54 not 100 percent sure yet Simplex truck. Stopped by Wayne's place in Alabama and he is leaning towards 53 because of the weights on the clutch. It's a pretty nice piece! Complete with original tow bar, but missing the box and a headlight and it's supposed to run! So let the fun begin!
