Restoration Projects / Re: 1939 Simplex Deluxe

Rick, that is some amazing work that you are doing. I have a couple of ServiCycles in the garage waiting for the day when I have time to restify them.  BTW, where does one find parts to rebuild the front suspension.  My springs are busted up/rusty...

What Year is my Bike? / Re: 2nd Simplex - No Frame Number?

If u take a look at the motor mount you can see that the frame is in tough shape. Clearly someone tried to repair the frame at some point and did a hack job.  Looks like I will have to find some quality DOM tubing, bend some new pieces and splice them in.

You r correct, it does have the round tubing under the left floor board which would indicate a shifter. How did the shifter work? Was there also a twist throttle on the handle bar? Or was speed controlled by the shifter?

What Year is my Bike? / 2nd Simplex - No Frame Number?
« on: March 30, 2013, 08:34:16 AM »
So last summer I purchased another Simplex but need help figuring out what year it is.  Unfortunately it does not have a motor and I can't find any number on the frame like my other Simplex #14490.  From the pictures you will see that this is an early bike based on the seat spring, front forks, etc.  Interested in thoughts on this.

BTW, it was originally blue with the yellow wheels but at some point was painted rattle can black.  I can see the blue color is some places.

Thanks

Frame, Tank, Seat, Controls, Etc / Front Fork Springs
« on: March 28, 2013, 08:03:54 PM »
Finally starting to dig into my Simplex by making a quick list of things I need to get the bike back on the road.  I really need help with replacement springs for my front fork. My springs are broken.  Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance

Simplexes with Non-Original Engines / Honda GC160/GC190 Question
« on: June 27, 2012, 05:26:41 PM »
Im researching the use of the GC160 as a replacement motor.  Does anyone know which specific model to go with?  Honda offers different shaft, throttle and even electric start options for the GC line.  I figured I should go with the manual throttle option, just add a return spring. Other advice?

What Year is my Bike? / 56 or 57 - Whats with the 150cc Decal
« on: June 27, 2012, 12:39:51 PM »
We know, based on the frame number 14490, that this Simplex Automatic was built in 1956 or 1957.  What confuses me is the 150cc decal on the headlight.  I have not seen another Simplex with a decal on the headlight. Is this correct for Simplex? Did Simplex launch the 150cc version at the beginning of 1957 or was it a mid year option.

Thanks

Simplexes with Non-Original Engines / Re: Vanguard VTwin in Simplex?
« on: June 26, 2012, 05:04:47 PM »
I'm ok with 56 or 57. This bike will look great sitting next to my 55 Buick. Should be an interesting project to work on. This group will be a great resource throughout the process.  My plan is to clean it up but preserve as much of the patina as possible. Make it a runner like my Buick which is still in original paint but motor, interior, mechanicals have been gone through.

I figured as much and I agree that too much HP would ruin the joy of the Simplex.  I do like the look of the GC160.  My plan is the GC160, an older Briggs or Wisconsin motor.

No pics of the bike yet, still waiting for delivery.  Do know that frame number is 14490 (motor is gone).  I mentioned to Mike that the headlight bucket also has a 150cc decal on it. Not sure if it is stock or not.

Simplexes with Non-Original Engines / Vanguard VTwin in Simplex?
« on: June 25, 2012, 11:11:46 AM »
I searched but did not find any mention of Vanguard conversions. Will a Briggs Vanguard 16HP VTwin fit in a Simplex frame without modding the frame? I know these conversions are popular with the Cushman crowd, the Cushman frames appear to have a whole lot more room.

BTW, I am new to this group and to Simplex.  I am in Minneapolis, MN

Thanks for all the great information.  Joel
